Noble House (Asian Saga) Paperback – September 1, 1986

“Clavell’s biggest triumph yet . . . storytelling done with dash and panache . . . a rousing read.”—Washington Post

The setting is Hong Kong, 1963. The action spans scarcely more than a week, but these are days of high adventure: from kidnapping and murder to financial double-dealing and natural catastrophes—fire, flood, landslide. Yet they are days filled as well with all the mystery and romance of Hong Kong—the heart of Asia— rich in every trade. . . money, flesh, opium, power.

Praise for Noble House

“Fiction for addicts . . . extravagantly romantic . . . a book that you can get lost in for weeks . . . staggering complexity . . . not only is it as long as life, it’s also as rich with possibilities.”
New York Times

“Tremendous entertainment . . . a seamless marvel of pure storytelling.”
Cleveland Plain Dealer

“A mesmerizer . . . spellbinding.”

James Clavell, the son of a Royal Navy family, was educated in Portsmouth before, as a young artillery officer, he was captured by the Japanese at the Fall of Singapore. It was on this experience that his bestselling novel KING RAT was based. He maintained this oriental interest in his other great works: TAI-PAN, SHOGUN, NOBLE HOUSE and GAI JIN. Clavell lived for many years in Vancouver and Los Angeles, before settling in Switzerland, where he died in 1994.

Every few years, I pull out my copy of Noble House and sit down for a reread of one of my favorite books. The story takes place during one week in 1963 in Hong Kong when it was still run by the British. It is essentially a Chinese city, and the British living there understand that, while it's also a hub in Asia for other great powers like the United States, Russia, and China.
The main protagonist is Ian Dunross, tai-pan of the Noble House (the commercial side of Struan's). Ian is a descendant of Dirk Struan, the pirate and founder of the Noble House, and there are many references back to the previous books in the Asian Saga. It's probably not necessary to read them to understand this book, but knowing them does lead to better enjoyment here. I like all the Easter eggs for Shogun and stories about the Hag, Dirk, and Tyler Brock.
The central premise of the plot is the American company Par-Con that comes to make a deal with either Struan's or their main rival, Rothwell-Gornt (the descendants of Tyler Brock). Linc Bartlett and his CFO Casey Tcholok are raiders, determined to get into the Asian market with whoever profits them most. Events are hampered by gun-running, fires, kidnappings, drug-running, spies, and more characters than I can name. The action moves quickly and there is a lot packed into every day. I've read this book several times, and I was still on the edge of my seat with all the villains, the plotting and the politics, all mixed in with actual events of the time. There's still resentment and scars from World War II, the US is gradually getting into the Viet Nam war, and spy scandals like Profumo rock Britain. At the center of it all is Hong Kong, the hub of commerce in Asia and a focus of the great powers of the time.
As I stated, there are a lot of characters. Mr. Clavell does a wonderful job of differentiating them by personality and culture. I find that some of the most interesting parts of the story. Women are just getting into the business world though not treated equally, and even less so by cultures. It's a long book and covers so much, but is never boring or slow. I'll pick it up again in a few years, but right now I highly recommend a read.

This is a long, yet utterly absorbing novel that takes place in a single week in the Hong Kong of 1963. While it is the penultimate book in James Clavell's Asian saga, it is not necessary to have ready any of the other books in the series to enjoy this one.

The story line focuses on several of the large trading houses that have operated in Hong Kong since the 19th century. These `hongs' or companies are fiercely competitive, with the richest one holding the title of `noble house.' At present, the noble house is Struan's, headed by Ian Dunross, a great-grandson of the founder, Scottish privateer Dirk Struan, whose story is told in an earlier novel, Tai-Pan.

Most of the Chinese who inhabit the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong are Cantonese, whose ancestors left the city of Canton (now Guangzhou) on mainland China. Their culture is ancient and elaborate, and their language rich and expressive. They are essentially a servant class to the Anglos like Dunross, although many are quite wealthy in their own right.

The story is complex and filled with many exceptionally well-drawn characters. There are ethnic Haklo fishermen who appear poor but have made millions in the stock market, wealthy Americans who arrive in Hong Kong to make deals they hope will give them entree to Asian markets, spies for both Nationalist and Communist China, as well as the Soviet Union; Chinese strivers who are chambermaids by day and gamblers by night, prostitutes, social climbers, mixed race Eurasians caught between two worlds, scions, bastards, pampered children, heroes and villains. Somehow, Clavell manages to mix all of these characters into a swift moving and captivating plot that will hold an intelligent readers' attention throughout the 1,000+ pages.

The feature I enjoy most is that Clavell includes lots of interesting factoids and cultural tidbits about the Cantonese and British expats as they lived in Hong Kong during the 1960s. Certainly these are generalizations, which some readers may view as stereotypes. Knowing how carefully researched Clavell's novels are, however, I choose to take these as amusing signposts that help me understand the context for his extraordinary story.

This is one of my favorite novels, which I re-read recently as part of my preparation for spending a couple of months in Hong Kong doing research with some students. Even the second time around, Noble House holds up as a great book.

Great book, but so many characters, so many plots and subplots, and so many complicated business deals, not to mention the intrigue and deception, I had let comprehension go and enjoy the story. His other six books in this series were much easier reads.

One of my favorite books

In a nutshell, and as other reviewers have noted, this is indeed a very long book and everything happens in just eight days in Hong Kong in 1963. All true, but what a book. This is a fast-paced financial and political thriller with a cast of dozens of important characters, several story lines, quite a few dead bodies and with many twists, unravelled only in the last 50 or so pages. There is also a lot to read here about the China, Hong Kong and the UK of the early 1960's, when Britain was still reeling from Suez and the Profumo scandal, the USA was just starting to assert itself in SE Asia and JFK was still alive. Much of this may surprise many readers, but the factual background is accurate with the exception of the deployment of fictitious US airborne division to the Soviet-Iranian border. I must add, however, that the author's views are strongly anti-Communist, anti-Soviet, and hard-line Tory, and these views have become nearly extinct since the book was written. This is definitely not a book for readers of the pc persuasion, excepting those with a truly open mind.
Readers not deterred by the previous paragraph will be rewarded by a very compelling novel. It cannot be read in one sitting, but it remains a tome which one puts aside only with great regret when each day ends. Fortunately, I read this book during the pandemic lockdown and it was far more rewarding than anything on the entertainment channels. This if course true of all of James Clavell's books, but the setting and complexity if this one made it special for me.

Qui in originale, in formato kindle (l'edizione cartacea italiana è praticamente introvabile, risalendo a decenni fa) . Acquistato in offerta, ma vale il prezzo pieno. Pienissimo

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best

Had this book before, but it was falling apart - so wanted a new one. Book Contents is just great - I have the whole series - Taipan, Gaijin, King Rat, Noble House, Whirlwind - stories that are hard to put down and can be read over and over again. Sorry, but the book was bent a bit when I got it, and the type is (for me) a bit small. Still, very happy to have it!
