Bar-Cohen lifts Kenyon to season sweep of Hiram

GAMBIER, Ohio -- In a physical North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contest that produced nearly 50 personal fouls, the Kenyon College men's basketball team emerged with a Saturday afternoon 81-70 victory over the visiting Hiram College Terriers.

Kenyon's offense was paced by junior Gefen Bar-Cohen, who whipped up a game-high 23 points, just one shy of his season best. He complemented that point total with 10 rebounds to tally his third double-double of the campaign.

Senior Dylan Fuerst contributed a career-best 16 points to the Owls final total, while Connor Moss went 7-of-8 at the free throw line and finished the game with 11 points to round out Kenyon's double-digit scorers. Additionally, first-year Charlie Heywood matched Bar-Cohen's game-high 10 rebounds.

Despite the hefty number of fouls called, neither team really took advantage. Kenyon was 18-of-32 at the line (56.3 percent) and Hiram didn't fare much better, going 16-of-25 (64.0 percent).

It was accuracy from the field that made the difference for the home team. Kenyon shot 30-of-55 overall (54.5 percent) while pestering the Terriers into a 25-of-63 (39.7 percent) performance.

Throughout the game, Hiram only held two leads and one of those was after the Terriers converted the first field goal. Kenyon answered a bit later with a three-pointer from Murathan Kocaman and back-to-back layups from Moss while racing out to a 9-4 advantage.

Kenyon's first-half lead grew to as many as eight points, but Hiram would later put together a quick 10-4 run to move ahead 30-29 with 3:45 left in the opening frame. Two free throws from Moss and a layup from Bar-Cohen regained the lead for the Owls, who closed out the half on a 12-2 run that got them to the break with a 41-32 edge.

That momentum carried over to the second half as two layups from Nick Nelson and a one from Bar-Cohen opened up a 15-point Kenyon lead.

The Owls' advantage swelled to as many as 21 points on two different occasions, but, again, the Terriers made a run. Just past the halfway mark of the second half, Hiram went on a 7-0 tear and a few minutes later, a 7-2 run that cut the Owls lead to six with four minutes remaining.

That margin would be as close as the Terriers would get. Anthony Testa gave Kenyon a bit more breathing room with the three-pointer and Bar-Cohen sealed the deal with a thunderous dunk at the one-minute mark.

Kenyon, which defeated Hiram earlier this season, is now 5-14 overall and 3-7 in NCAC play. Saturday's win snapped a six-game skid for the Owls, who sent the Terriers packing with a 2-17 record, including a 0-10 NCAC mark.
