Lucky Blocks is a very popular Minecraft mod, and aims to add some randomness and unpredictability to the game. It does this by spawning blocks, called Lucky Blocks which the player can destroy for random rewards and drops.

These blocks don’t just spawn naturally either, as they can be crafted and have their luck rating increased. Thankfully, Lucky Blocks is very well supported and up-to date, and is available for Minecraft 1.6.4 all the way up to 1.16.1.

We’ve tested this mod and wrote the following guide for Minecraft 1.12.2, as it has the best modding support. If you want to check out some more guides like this, take a look through our Minecraft Mods area.

How to Install the Lucky Blocks Mod

Unlike other mods we typically cover, Lucky Blocks isn’t available on Curse Forge. Instead, you have to get it from their official website, MinecraftAscending. That link should take you straight to the download page, where you can find a link for your version of Minecraft. There are plenty of Configuration and Add-ons available on CurseForge though, which change drops, add new items and more.

You need to then drop this file into your Minecraft mods folder, which can be found in the default installation directory. With Forge installed, open Minecraft, select ‘Mods’ from the main menu and then press the ‘Open Mods Folder’ button located in the bottom left corner, this is where you should place the JAR file. If you don’t know how to do any of these steps, or haven’t installed Forge yet, read our in-depth Forge & Mod Installation Guide.

How to Get Lucky Blocks

To test if Lucky Blocks is working, you should go into Creative Mode and look through the inventory interface. Search for Lucky Blocks to see if they’ve been added to the Creative menu. If so, the mod is working correctly and ready to be played with.

Naturally Spawning Lucky Blocks

Lucky Blocks will naturally spawn throughout your Minecraft dimensions. The chances of finding them are slightly rare, although the developer states that you’ll have a little more luck in places such as the Nether. These blocks can spawn anywhere, whether it be below or above ground.

Spawning in the Nether

You have full control over the spawn rate of Lucky Blocks. Just edit the natural_gen.txt file, found in the lucky_block folder, inside the Configuration folder of your Minecraft directory. By default, Lucky Blocks have a 1 in 600 chance of spawning in the Overworld for each chunk. If you wanted them to spawn in every chunk, you’d set the configuration to: type=block,ID=lucky:lucky_block@chance=1

Crafting Lucky Blocks

As well as finding Lucky Blocks naturally in Minecraft, you can also craft them yourself. The recipe is quite simply, simply place a Dropper in the middle slot of a Crafting Table, then surround it in Gold Ingots.

Lucky Blocks Recipe

Just like naturally spawning blocks, you can configure the recipe by editing the configuration files. Specifically, you should look for the recipes.txt file. When you craft a Lucky Block, it will have a Luck Value of 0. This value determines the chances of receiving positive or negative effects.

Upgrading the Luck Value

You can upgrade the Luck amount by placing the Lucky Block in the middle slot of a Crafting Table. Surrounding it with various valuable items will contribute to increasing the luck. When you’re happy with the amount, you can place the block down and mine it.

Collecting Lucky Blocks

To collect items from Lucky Blocks, all you have to do is mine it with your Pickaxe. The items that are dropped is random, but the Luck value will change the chances of receiving better items.

Inside the drops.txt configuration file, you can change what items should drop, as well as their chances. You’ll also have a chance of receiving one of the new Lucky Items.

Lucky Items

When installing the Lucky Blocks mod, it also adds some new items to Minecraft. These can only be obtained from mining Lucky Blocks, and have a low chance of dropping.

These items are the Lucky Sword, Lucky Bow and Lucky Potion. When using the Lucky Sword, some swings will give bonus effects, such as a flurry of arrows or applying blindness to your opponent. Using the Lucky Bow, there is a chance that instead of firing normal arrows, other ammunition is used such as TNT and Meteorites. Throwing Lucky Potions will provide a random effect to whomever it hits.
