THE COMPLETE NAZZ (CD BOX SET) from Todd Rundgren

I do plan on getting this, as Nazz is a great group and I don’t own any of their work. Is anyone else interested in this?

*(This box set seems to be available for purchase immediately, at least on Bandcamp and I’ve even seen it on eBay, but Amazon lists it as a preorder that’s coming out August 30th.)

One of my all-time favourite bands. Have the three LPS, a best of, and a couple of boots. I'd be keen to get all those extra songs in good quality definitely! Never heard of Purple Pyramid Records though. Good on 'em, but.

I do notice that they said “all the recordings” but it does seem to be missing a few tracks released on the 2006 Castle Music CD “Nazz Nazz - Including Nazz III - The Fungo Beat Sessions”

Some tracks that seem to be missing on this new Complete Nazz are:

    Kicks (Long Version)
    Meridian Leeward (Alternate Version)
    Letters Don’t Count (Todd Vocal)
    Not Wrong Long (Extended Beginning)

But it does seem to have a track the 2006 CD doesn’t:

The bonus tracks (except one by the looks of it) have all been previously released on earlier CD editions. Purple Pyramid is related to their parent label, Cleopatra Records.

I only have the vinyl records and cds (no bonus tracks) but my bootleg ("Nazz from Philadephia") has a variety of these bonus songs and what looks like a couple that aren't on this box set - like Some People (with different lyrics) and Open My Eyes (with no phasing on the guitar).

Do you think that’s this track? It’s included on this box set.

This looks interesting. I am a Todd fan but I've never delved into Nazz. If the price is good and the mastering is good, this will be an easy way to remedy that.

Unrelated, but I could have sworn Purple Pyramid was a bootleg label. I'm pretty sure I put up a WTB ad for a Purple Pyramid CD (can't remember which one) a long time ago and it got deleted by the Gorts. I must be confusing it with something else. Cleopatra is definitely not a bootleg label and Discogs lists this as a sub-label.

Todd himself has listed the Nazz box on his own Bandcamp page, so it's endorsed by him!

If you like early Todd 70-74, and if you love The Who/Beatles/Yardbirds around 1967-68, then you will LOVE The Nazz. One of my all-time favourite bands. Their third album is more like a Todd solo record where he wanted to do more ballads and that gave the other guys - who wanted to keep rocking - the willies!

It's worth pointing out that Nazz III, released in 1971, was actually tracks recorded in 1968 and early '69 for the second LP, which was initially planned to be a double album called Fungo Bat. The belated release was meant to capitalize on Todd solo success, but Todd's vocals were replaced on five of the six tracks he had sung on by Nazz keyboardist Robert "Stewkey" Antoni.

  16. I have the three LPs and Fungo Bat Acetates, but no bonus material so I’m in for this. Great British Invasion influenced music. Under The Ice is a favorite.

That’s a good price, $45! Amazon has it for $48, so it’s better to get it from those sources than Bandcamp for $59

I have the “Open our Eyes” Anthology, which I really enjoy but I wouldn’t call myself a Nazz freak. However, I’m wondering if that may be a result of the scattershot sequencing of the anthology. Are the Nazz best listened to as an album’s band? In other words, do you recommend getting this new complete collection to have the full albums in proper order? And, for those who have heard them, are the bonus tracks essential listening? Just debating about whether to drop $45 on this new release or stick with “Open Our Eyes”. Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Cleopatra Records recently reissued them all on coloured vinyl! They can all be had at good prices on Discogs and you can buy them other places as well. Check it out! I’d like to get these at some point too, but I’ll get these CDs first.

I’ve never been a comps guy, and I always dig bonus tracks so this appeals to me way more. The alternate versions of some of the Nazz III tracks with Todd on lead vocals are cool to hear. So you can still with the “Open Our Eyes” comp and you’ll be ok, but I’d personally recommend hearing them in order and getting bonus tracks. If you have Apple Music or Spotify you can hear the bonus tracks for yourself and determine if they’re worth buying.

You can also find bonus tracks on their YouTube channel:

  24. Not highly regarded for quality control though, so exercise caution.

Thanks for the link. I use Amazon Music so hopefully they will have it streaming. Then I can decide if it’s worth a purchase. Also probably a good idea to hear some reports on SQ first!
