PODS, which stands for Portable On Demand Storage, started in 1998 in Tampa, Florida, and is one of the first portable storage container companies in the industry. The company, now headquartered in Clearwater, Florida, has more than 240 storage locations in 46 states and six Canadian provinces, as well as locations in Australia and the United Kingdom.
PODS originated as a portable storage company but later began offering moving services as well – with local and long-distance options. The company says it has made more than 6 million moves since its inception. It uses a hydraulic lift system called PODZILLA that ensures the container doesn’t tip during loading and unloading from the transport truck.
PODS is not a household goods mover, but rather a freight carrier and moving broker, since it doesn’t technically transport goods but contracts with other agents or companies to do that. As a moving service, it doesn’t have to provide valuation protection for customers’ belongings during interstate moves as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, but it does have to follow FMCSA’s safety regulations. However, the company does require personal belongings protection (more on that is explained below).

Customers who want a DIY loading and unloading option

Those who don’t own their own property, since you might need approvals or permits
People who want a full-service moving company

For its moving services, PODS doesn’t provide online quotes. To get an initial estimate, you’ll need to fill out an online form and will then be contacted by a PODS representative. The company does say that its storage unit pricing starts at $149 per month, with delivery and pickup fees averaging $74.99.
Factors that will affect the cost of your move include moving distance, the number of items you’re moving, your time frame, and the complexity of the move. PODS doesn’t require a deposit and you can cancel without penalty up to three days before the scheduled container delivery.
The company allows you to pay as you go – meaning you don’t have to pay for the entire move upfront – and it offers financing through a third-party company.
The table below shows some general pricing from the companies we reviewed.

PODS has more than 240 locations in 46 states and six Canadian provinces. The company also has a limited number of locations in the United Kingdom and Australia.
Both PODS and U-Pack offer portable storage container delivery. They will drop the container off at your location, pick it up at your convenience, and then move it to your new location. PODS will give you up to 30 days if you’re loading yourself, while U-Pack provides three days to pack your items in a container and then three days to unpack them at your new home.
While PODS requires you to speak with a representative to get a quote, U-Pack will give you an instant online quote after you fill out just a few details about your move. Both companies are limited in terms of in-house additional services, as they contract out loading, unloading, and other options to third parties.
Both PODS and U-Pack are moving services and brokers. U-Pack is partnered with ABF Freight to provide transport for its containers.
PODS may be more ideal for larger container moves because of its wider variety of container options, while U-Pack only offers a single-sized ReloCube – though you can use more than one or choose a larger moving trailer as options.

With more than 240 locations across the U.S. and Canada, PODS has most of the country covered. U-Haul, however, gives that a whole new meaning with more than 20,000 neighborhood dealers in the U.S. And like PODS, U-Haul offers portable storage containers through its U-Box service.
U-Haul separates itself from PODS in its truck rental options – with sizes as small as a pickup truck all the way up to a 26-foot truck that can move the contents of a three- to four-bedroom home.
PODS’ 30-day rentals with smaller containers make it ideal for smaller, DIY moves, though the company does offer other services, like moving labor, through third parties. U-Haul also outsources moving labor services, but its wide range of truck and trailer options make it a better choice for larger and long-distance moves if you don’t mind doing the driving.
If you’re interested in using PODS, simply fill out a quick form on its website with some basic information about your move and a company representative will reach out with a quote to begin your moving process. You can also contact the company by phone.
To cancel with PODS, you’ll need to call the customer service department. If you want a full refund (upfront payment deadlines vary), you need to cancel by 4 p.m. local time at least three days before your container delivery date.
PODS requires content protection with all of its moves. Before you purchase this protection, check your homeowners or renters insurance policy to make sure it doesn’t cover your items during your move. If it does, then you’ll be fine with PODS’ “Container Only” protection coverage. Otherwise, you should purchase PODS’ general “Contents Protection” plan, which covers both the container and all the contents inside during the move.
The company offers coverage levels from $5,000 up to $300,000 with a deductible of only $100. You can find out more by reading PODS’ content protection brochure.
Yes, PODS does offer long-distance moving services. The company will drop off its portable container at your home and you have 30 days to load at your own pace or use one of its third-party moving services. After that, PODS will pick up your container and move it to your new location or to one of its storage facilities, whether that’s in the same state or across the country.
For more information, see our guide on the Best Long-Distance Moving Companies.
Yes, interstate moves – which are simply moves across state lines or national borders, such as Canada – are part of PODS’ moving services. Like long-distance moving, PODS can help you with any of your interstate moving needs, and the process is the same.
For more details, check out our guide on the Best Interstate Moving Companies.
PODS says all of its service dates are subject to availability, so the earlier you schedule your move, the better chance you have of securing your chosen date.
PODS does offer full container load service, so your belongings will move or be stored within their own container.
Yes, PODS offers container kits with moving supplies designed to fit inside its 8-, 12-, and 16-foot portable containers. Each kit contains small, medium, and large moving boxes, as well as a black marker and one roll of tape. If you choose the 16-foot kit, you’ll receive more boxes than the 12-foot kit and so on.
Yes, you’ll need to pack your own items unless you contract with another company to help. After PODS drops off your container, you have 30 days to load it up. If you need more time, you can rent the container for another 30 days. If you want help loading and unloading, PODS offers moving services through third-party companies.
PODS has storage locations throughout the country where you can temporarily store your belongings either short or long term. Outside of moving, its storage services might be ideal for a decluttering project, renovations, or if you need extra space for a remodel.
No, PODS doesn’t currently offer a mobile app.
No, PODS doesn’t offer any tracking services during moves. However, you can find out the estimated time your container is scheduled to be delivered on your MyPODS.com account. This delivery window will also be sent via email the day before your service date.
PODS containers aren’t ideal for moving large and specialty items like cars, pianos, pool tables, etc. If you have a particular item you want moved, you can contact the company to see if that is an option. The company does use a third-party for car shipping.
PODS has more than 2,700 employees across the U.S. and Canada. It also contracts with agents that have their own moving companies to transport containers. The company does outsource additional services, such as packing and unpacking, if a customer chooses that option.
Yes, PODS is bonded and insured by the FMCSA.
