The autobiography of US Grant is rightfully considered the cream of the crop. As Ulysses S Grant was facing terminal cancer and financially challenged due to bad investments Grant wanted to provide a source of income for his beloved wife Julia. This was the late 19th Century before presidential pensions. Grant's autobiography became an immediate success, partially because America's finest writer, Mark Twain, volunteered to help President Grant with the project, which they finished just 2 weeks before Grant died from throat cancer. Twain's humous style compliments Grant's attention to detail in this thoroughly informative retelling of the pre and post Civil War era, including his controversial presidency.

This book is exactly what it says . Memories of the Civil War. This is really only Vol. II. Military , battles, etc. Nothing else. If you are looking for the story of Grant's life from birth, look for a combined Vol I and II. Or supplement it with a Vol I. There are books available with both volumes. This one is not.

To enjoy this terrific book you need to be somewhat of a history buff. The extraordinary autobiography by U.S. Grant brings a first hand focus to the Civil War. The detail on the battles he fought and commanded are vivid and in his own words. I expect a true history major would digest each word and battle; I admit I moved past some of the dialogue as it was too detailed for me. Nonetheless I enjoyed the book and highly recommend it to students allowing the reader to obtain a different perspective on the Civil War.

U.S. Grant has taken many hits over the years, his writing style is timeless however. Can easily be read and enjoyed by history buffs and perhaps even "educated" college graduates.

I did not expect such detailed account of Grant’s every battle. About 2/3 through the book I skipped several chapters. He obviously had a bunch of journals and correspondence. I very much like military history, but he lived 20 years after the war. I really expected a great more of personal reflective time devoted the post war era. He had some thoughts in the conclusion but was not extensive. Nothing on the killing of Lincoln and its impact and nothing on his presidency. His growing up was interesting and his early years in the military especially the Mexican War.

Very interesting read a must if you are a civil war buff, and to think it almost didn’t get written. The back story of grant is also intresting

Best autobiography ever written. Clear, smooth, and very easy to understand.
Sure could have used a couple maps though.
