That Summer: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 14,040 ratings

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
Named a Notable Work of Fiction by The Washington Post

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Big Summer comes another “ideal beach read, full of secrets and complicated female friendships” (Cosmopolitan).

Daisy Shoemaker can’t sleep. With a thriving cooking business, full schedule of volunteer work, and a beautiful home in the Philadelphia suburbs, she should be content. But her teenage daughter can be a handful, her husband can be distant, her work can feel trivial, and she has lots of acquaintances, but no real friends. Still, Daisy knows she’s got it good. So why is she up all night?

While Daisy tries to identify the root of her dissatisfaction, she’s also receiving misdirected emails meant for a woman named Diana Starling, whose email address is just one punctuation mark away from her own. While Daisy’s driving carpools, Diana is chairing meetings. While Daisy’s making dinner, Diana’s making plans to reorganize corporations. Diana’s glamorous, sophisticated, single-lady life is miles away from Daisy’s simpler existence. When an apology leads to an invitation, the two women meet and become friends. But, as they get closer, we learn that their connection was not completely accidental. Who IS this other woman, and what does she want with Daisy?

From the manicured Main Line of Philadelphia to the wild landscape of the Outer Cape, written with Jennifer Weiner’s signature wit and sharp observations,
That Summer is a “compelling, nuanced novel” (Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post) about surviving our pasts, confronting our futures, and the sustaining bonds of friendship.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of May 2021: With a title like That Summer and a cover resplendent with a beachy scene, readers may expect a light and fluffy summer read in Weiner’s latest. That Summer is not that book, and in this reader’s eyes, that is a very good thing. Daisy Shoemaker, devoted wife, mother, and keeper of house, starts receiving emails intended for a stranger named Diana with a very similar email address. While clearing up the confusion, Daisy and Diana arrange to meet up and they quickly become friends. Daisy is lonely: her husband, Hal, works long hours, treats her like a kept pet, and her 15-year old daughter is sullen and rebellious. But Diana is keeping a secret from her past, an event that caused her charmed life to spin out of control, and Daisy is an unknowing party in Diana’s revenge plan. That Summer is a powerful and insightful book about the #metoo movement, friendship and family, and the role of men and women. Even after years of bestsellers, Weiner’s ability to keep her books fresh and relevant speaks to her talent as a writer. —Sarah Gelman, Amazon Book Review

Review

“Weiner has made a major literary career out of writing engrossing popular novels that take women seriously. One of Weiner’s signature strengths as a writer is her ability to realistically depict how people change in body and soul…Weiner writes incisively, yet with restraint… That Summer is a compelling, nuanced novel about the long, terrible aftermath of sexual assault and the things that can be stolen from women that can never be fully restored. But, because it’s a Jennifer Weiner novel, it’s no polemic. It’s empowering in its own way. Weiner seems to steadfastly believe in the saving grace of humor, the ability of time to open up possibilities and the strength of female friendship. Me, too."Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post

“Your ideal beach read, full of secrets and complicated female friendships.” —
Cosmopolitan

“Weiner, the undisputed boss of the beach read, is back with another stunner. . . . That Summer incisively examines the way privilege shapes and shields those who wield it, and explores the circuitous path toward justice when healking falls short." —
New York Times

"Fun and flirty." —
PopSugar

“Jennifer Weiner's beachy books are basically a staple of the season, and this is no exception. This twisty novel about female friendship will make the hours fly by.” —
Good Housekeeping

"A page-turner. Reflective of the #MeToo movement and the importance of accountability, it’s a thought-provoking and timely book." —
Seattle Book Review

"Like many of Weiner’s works, the novel explores themes of femininity and motherhood, but it’s the book’s tackling of the #MeToo movement through more than one complicit character that sets it apart." —
Shondaland

“This one will solve all your ‘I can’t get into any book right now’ problems.” —
TheSkimm

"Weiner's storytelling skill is such that she paints an uncompromising, complicated portrait of the insidious dangers of the patriarchy that is also a lot of fun to read. Weiner's latest is a summer banger with a ripped-from-the headlines plot, which is sure to garner lots of attention." —
Booklist (starred)

“The summer wouldn't be complete without an aptly-titled novel from Jennifer Weiner.” —
Marie Claire

"Weiner follows up Big Summer with another emotionally charged drama, this one centered on a #MeToo reckoning. Weiner's writing is infused with evocative depictions... [and her] legions of fans will applaud this emotionally affecting and often surprising story." —
Publishers Weekly

"Fans will enjoy references to the murder plot of Weiner's previous novel,
Big Summer (2020), and sprinklings of Weiner's signature descriptions of food and cooking." — Kirkus Reviews

“A page turner about lost opportunities and decades-old secrets.” —
New York Post

A Compelling Beach Read

A Compelling Beach Read
I’m a longtime fan of Jennifer Weiner and have been reading her novels since I too the plunge into adult books. What I find most noticeable about them is that they grow with the times. She uses real life situations that fit into the world we live in making them realistic and compulsively readable. It’s wonderful to watch an author’s work grow and Jennifer Weiner has done this quite well over the years. This book in particular fits in the with #metoo movement that has been sweeping across the nation. Readers should be warned that some of the content may be triggering (i.e., rape) and should proceed with caution if this is a subject that bothers them. Don’t let the pretty cover fool you into thinking it’s a lighter beach read because the topics at hand are sometimes hard to read about. NO matter, Jennifer Weiner did a wonderful job pulling it off even though the book felt a little slow at some points.I don’t want to get into the plot too much because I think my initial thoughts above give you an idea of the book, you’re reading here but I will say that this is a story about friendship, growth, overcoming, and finding oneself. This book is targeted more towards women’s fiction readers, but I think fans of many different genres will enjoy it because of how well it fits into today’s world. Daisy and Diana are written as strong women who despite their differences have found solace in one another through their mutual heartache and friendship. These two bring about something strong in each other and really encompasses the women’s power movement. I honestly think these are some of the best female leads I’ve read in a long time. My heart broke for them both (for entirely different reasons of course) but watching them grow and overcome was quite beautiful. I also have to mention that I adored both Beatrice (her taxidermy is hilarious) and Michael. Michael is a big bear of a man and Diana found the perfect guy for her as he’s caring, understanding, and so full of heart. I would love to see characters like him in more male leads! He was my favorite! That all being said, if you enjoy a book that involves a little bit of revenge (or rather, potential revenge), a novel that discusses serious real-world issues, and a book that is really empowering for women then this is the book for you. I look forward to reading many more of her novels in the future.

I love reading Ms Writer's books...they're so well written, she pulls you in within the first few chapters & you can't put it down the end. This one is no exception: a topical subject, believable characters, even the "bad guys".

As an avid reader of all things Jennifer Weiner, I loudly applaud this novel.and urge you to read it. Weiner always tackles an issue head-on, explores it, explains it and deals with it without being "preachy," or superior. This time the issue is the unwanted sex between a naive fifteen-year-old and a drunk, entitled eighteen-year-old, its repercussions, results, and lasting effects. The idealistic woman, who at twenty, had married the rapist, totally unaware of his w reckless past, is the narrator. Seiner deals with details and the thoughts and lives of others with chapters away from the narrator's point of view. The woman's realization of her real place in the man's life absolutely broke my heart. Diana, the girl who was so brutally raped, tells the story of her broken life with the honesty that comes from a stolen innocence. Bernice is the current day teen, the daughter of the rapist, whose innocent efforts to "deal" with her parents and growing up describe so many of today's youth. The ending really blew me away. The idea of such a resolution certainly testifies to Writer's well preserved reputation as a master writer. I hope you will read this book: it is certainly worth your time.

How unfortunate that so many people are giving this book a low rating due to their politics—which is, ironically, what they accuse the author of doing. They believe Brett Kavanaugh, so therefore this book is bad. I am also not sure what "white men bashing" means, but if it means calling attention to men who committed crimes and got away with it and other men who covered for them (which has 100% been the case throughout history and certainly among many prep school students), I'm not clear on what the problem is. These reviews are so transparent, and it's truly sad that some people can't get past their own denial. I thought this was a plausible story and plot and found the characters relatable and enjoyable. But Jennifer Weiner needs an editor. There are so many mistakes in this book—not only typos and grammatical problems but lapses of fact. It needed a once-over by an eagle-eyed editor, which unfortunately she did not have. I hope that will be corrected in the future.

This is the first book I had read by this arthur, and when I first started reading it I knew what was going to happened and it did. I was not sure I was interested in continuing but I did and I am so glad I did. When a terrible incident happens in someone's life we rarely think about the life-long reprocussions from the event and how this event can affect so many other lives. A great read, lot of discussion questions for a book club.
