Tom Sawyer Abroad is a novel by Mark Twain published in 1894. It features Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn in a parody of adventure stories like those of Jules Verne. Tom, Huck, and Jim travel to Africa in a futuristic hot air balloon, where they survive encounters with lions, robbers, and fleas to see some of the world's greatest wonders, including the Pyramids and the Sphinx. The story is told using the first-person narrative voice of Huck Finn. It is a sequel, set in the time following the title story of the Tom Sawyer series.

About the Author

Mark Twain wurde am 30.11.1835 in Florida (Missouri) geboren. Sein eigentlicher Name ist Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Der Vater starb 1847 und Twain mußte im Alter von zwölf Jahren die Schule abbrechen und begann eine Lehre als Schriftsetzer. Mit 17 Jahren ging er nach New York, dann nach Philadelphia, wo er die ersten Reiseskizzen schrieb. Von 1857 bis 1860 war er Lotse auf dem Mississippi, nahm am Sezessionskrieg auf der Seite der Konföderierten teil und war 1861 Silbersucher in Nevada. 1864 lebte er in San Francisco, 1866 als Reporter auf Hawaii und 1867 als Reisender in Europa und Palästina. Er gründete einen Verlag, mußte aber 1894 Konkurs anmelden und ging auf Weltreise, um mit Vorträgen seine Schulden abzutragen. I read Tom Sawyer's adventures when I was only seven years old. Since then, he became my best book- friend. There is nothing in this book that I don't like to read again and again.

What fascinates me the most is the understanding of what is work and what is play! So easy yet so hard to fathom! Aunt Polly is cool as it's not easy to put up with Tom's pranks.

A true classical masterpiece from Mark Twain.

A sequel not as good as the originals

This book is more for the people who loved Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, and just have to have more of them. In this book Tom, Huck, and Jim go on an adventure to the Sahara desert. Other then the doctor in the first chapters, it is only the three of them. Tom often argues with Jim and Huck about random facts, Tom is right but is defeated by being double teamed by Jim and Huck. While this is funny the first few times it gets rather old after the fifth argument. You could say this book is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn without Huck and Jim leaving the raft and the inclusion of Tom.
It was funny at times, and it is free. If you love Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, you could love this book. If you hated the two books stay away. This book could be skipped, but if you just have to revisit these characters the choices are very limited.

As usual excellent service from Amazon, delivered promptly but we returned it via Amazons again excellent service, dropping of for free at our local shop and refunding within the day!

This is a large A4 sized paperback and we purchased for our 10 year old grandson who is a brilliant reader but when we read the stories we quickly realised that original text is not now acceptable for 21st century children with lots of words repeated which would cause offence.

It is a shame as the stories are great, maybe the publisher could edit the text to be more PC for modern readers.

When I was growing up, we had a 3-books-in-1-volume set of Tom Sawyer tales. The first one was the classic The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I read it, laughed myself silly over some of the classic scenes, like Tom whitewashing the fence and feeding the cat his medicine, and started in on the two sequels with a high sense of anticipation. And they fell completely flat.

This is a mildly interesting kids' adventure tale, with Tom, Huck and Jim sailing over Africa in a hot air balloon. The characters are sillier and the story lacks the kind of insight you might have expected. Mark Twain was in dire financial straits by this time, and I think he churned out these sequels without putting a lot of thought into them. Too bad.
