Troy was raised in Santa Monica by his parents Tom Hayden, a politician and an activist, and his mother Jane Fonda who is an actress and an activist among other things – although his last name in his California Birth Index says Hayden, he has stated how his parents named him Troy Garity. He was named after Nguyen Van Troi who was a Vietnamese resistance leader, while he got the ‘O’Donovan’ part from Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa, an Irish Fenian living in the 19th century. Troy has a half-sister named Vanessa Vadim from his mother’s first marriage – Vanessa is a director and a cinematographer.

In 1996, he played a bartender in “The Cherokee Kid” movie, before appearing as an intern in the “Conspiracy Theory” in 1997 – he won roles in several movies in 2000, such as “Steal This Movie!”, “Rude Awakening”, and “Code Blue”, while his breakthrough role came in 2002 when he played Isaac Rosenberg in the film “Barbershop”. He became even more popular after portraying Barry Winchell in the drama “Soldier’s Girl” in 2003., being nominated for a Golden Globe Award, an Independent Spirit Award, and a Satellite Award while not winning any.
