In Young Sheldon‘s Season 7 premiere, Mandy swore that she would never move back in with her parents. “She’s pretty adamant that she would never do it,” executive producer Steve Holland told TVLine at the time. “Although, six or seven people in one house, with one bathroom, can start to wear thin after a while” — especially when that bathroom no longer has a working toilet.
We ran that scenario by Emily Osment during our recent Q&A, at which point Osment let slip that Mandy has a change of heart. Her about-face came in “An Ankle Monitor and a Big Plastic Crap House,” which gave off serious backdoor pilot vibes — that is, if CBS‘ forthcoming Georgie-and-Mandy spinoff centers on Georgie and his young family living under his in-laws’ roof. But is that a spinoff you’d want to watch? Let’s get into it….
In Season 7, Episode 8, newlyweds Mandy and Georgie returned home to discover that A) Meemaw’s illegal gambling room had been shut down and Georgie was out of a job, and B) the Coopers would have to rely on a Porta-Potty until George and Mary scraped together enough money to replace their septic tank.
Suffice it to say, the honeymoon was officially over.
Unwilling to do her business in the backyard, Mandy, along with Georgie and CeeCee, moved in with Jim and Audrey (played by recurring guest stars Will Sasso and Rachel Bay Jones). Mandy’s dad welcomed all three of them into his home with open arms. As for her mom, well… let’s just say she was thrilled to have Mandy and CeeCee there.
Georgie knew it wasn’t going to be easy to win over his mother-in-law, but he was determined. Relentless, even! After making breakfast for the entire family, Georgie insisted on handling the grocery shopping. After that, he took it upon himself to clean out the McAllisters’ gutters. Yet Audrey remained skeptical that Georgie was worthy of being a member of their family. It wasn’t until she saw him reading CeeCee a bedtime story that she began to have a change of heart.
The following day, Georgie got himself a part-time job at the supermarket. It was a temporary solution, he explained, until he found a full-time job to support his wife and daughter. At that point, Audrey gave Jim the go-ahead to offer their son-in-law a job at McAllister Auto & Tire — and need we remind you, Sheldon’s brother eventually goes on to open his own chain of tire stores, a future development first presented during Season 11 of The Big Bang Theory.
As of press time, little is known about the Georgie-and-Mandy spinoff. Only Osment and Montana Jordan have been confirmed to star in the multi-cam, which will follow the couple “as they raise their young family in Texas while navigating the challenges of adulthood, parenting and marriage.” Might that involve them living with Jim and Audrey while they save up enough money for a place of their own? And is that a show you’d be interested in watching, week after week? Grade the potential backdoor pilot below, then hit the comments and let us know.
Love this show, but really looking forward to the spin-off. 2 of my favorite characters on TV right now!
I know the show kinda plays fast & loose with TBBT continuity, but don’t we already know this marriage doesn’t last? I’m fairly sure that was established when we first met Georgie on the “mothership” series. I know it’s TV, but I’m gonna have a hard time rooting for a couple I know doesn’t ultimately make it.
TV can also play with time too. One season does not have to correlate into one year. Especially in multi cam sitcom land
As many have said, much like the three knocks was played around with, Georgie and Mandy can easily divorce and get remarried. He can even marry someone ewlse in between and the whole thing be a big Vegas bender misunderstanding, as they had in Friends.
Georgie and Mandy just aren’t that interesting. I wish they would follow Sheldon ro Cal tech instead
So often comedies start out as an ensemble and the one of the kids becomes the star. This show started with a kid as a star and had become a show where you really want to see all the characters except him. Georgie has been my favorite for a long time now and I look forward to the spin-off’s spin-off.
I really hope they keep the cast they have now, just not George (RIP) and Sheldon. I love the show the last couple of seasons; I feel like they switched the focus off of Sheldon, and it really improved the show.
100%. If they don’t keep the full cast (except George (RIP) and Sheldon) I probably won’t watch. Not loving Mandy’s Mom character. She is no Mary. And Georgie tells adult Sheldon when he left for Cal Tech he stayed to help his Mom after George sr. death. It would be right to have the rest of the family not together
Good episode, except for the plothole that the Coopers weren’t on the city’s sewer system. I’ve never heard of a house inside city limits having a septic tank. (Even my grandparents who lived in a part of a village that was positively rural was on the village’s system.)
Good point! I was thinking the same thing. It just proved that the writers are running out of ideas so they invented this ridiculous port-a-potty angle! Time to retire Young Sheldon!
Really???? That simple detail about a sewer system matters to you??? It’s television. Not every little thing has to perfectly make sense.
And, in case you took a Rip Van Winkle-type nap and somehow missed the news, Young Sheldon is retiring. It is now in its final episodes.
The viewing audience who have been watching this series from the beginning, deserve better than to have writers basically mailing it in when it comes the writing for this last season.
Well said, thank you Spanky!
I have been a big fan of the Big Bang Theory since it aired. Wasn’t sure about Young Sheldon but boy was I wrong. I do believe I am not alone with hoping to continue watching how this new family unit will grow.
I only hope for it to continue.
I would prefer it include Mandy Potts and her boyfriend. They have been a big part of the success of the show and would be very disappointed if they weren’t a part of the new show. Maybe George gets a new coaching job and the four of them, George, Mary, Sheldon and the sister move to the new job while memaw, her boyfriend, and Mandy’s parents carry on. Please keep memaw and boyfriend on or I probably won’t enjoy watching how how Mandy’s mother treats Georgie!!!!!
You do know George is gonna die right?
There are lots of ways around that. Sheldon is book smart, but when it comes to everything else, he is a moron of epic proportions. They could easily find a way to have George still be alive. Whether the viewing audience would buy it is another question.
I’d prefer that Mandy’s parents be recurring players rather than part of the main cast of the spinoff. I’d be getting Three’s A Crowd vibes if they shoehorn Mandy’s parents in to be a thorn (I know Mandy’s dad is all for Georgie currently …).
Thursday nights won’t be the same without Young Sheldon. I would watch a spin-off with Mandy and Georgie and hopefully Meemaw and Sheldon will pop in sometimes.
Is it bad that I’m more interested in seeing “Made in Medford” about George Jr., and Mandy and family than seeing any more of Sheldon?
Please incliude Missy in the new show. She is a most interesting character, at first gance s dipsy rebelious teenager, yet deep down a losy litle girl at herat who has a heart as big as well Texas.
Sadly it has been reported that the actress wants to move on.
I hope that we won’t have too much of the parents. I’m so not a fan of Rachel Bay Jones who plays Mandy’s mother. Didn’t like her on The Good Doctor, United States of Al or anything else. Truly gets on my last nerve. Love Will Sasso though. I hope we see MeeMaw, Dale and Mary at least occasionally.
Audrey and Mary are basically the same character. Neither one are likable.
That said, Audrey should hold her daughter more accountable than Georgie. She is older than Georgie.
I never understood why the writers chose to make Mary and Audrey so domineering towards their husbands. Their treatment of these men borders on emotional abuse and is uncomfortable to watch at times. This is a SITCOM for God’s sake!
I would love for their to be a spinoff with Georgie and Mandy!
Wow! It seems that every good show gets the axe 🪓 at CBS. So Help Me Todd was another of my favorites that has fallen under that 🪓. I’m afraid to get caught up in any CBS drama anymore, knowing that it’s probably not going to last very long (sigh).
So help me Todd is about to leave now nothing good left on that night back to fire stick I go
So help me Todd is opposite Grays Anatomy
It needs a different time slot to be successful. I enjoy watching it!!!
Would love to see a spinoff with Georgie and
Mandy. The original Cooper family can make guest appearsnces! On another note, what was CBS thinking, cancelling So Help ME Todd, love that show! If they wanted to cancel something, NCIS Sydney can go. Loved NCIS New Orleans,, and they took that away. Come on CBS wake-up and let us enjoy some good family TV!
Cancelling “ Todd” is criminal…best show on TV…CBS knows nothing…
At least there’s still “Ghosts”…great show!
Wish Missy could be with them on their new show.
