Rather dull.

Recorded live on a 1980 North American tour that seems to have stretched from Tulsa to Toronto, 999’s licks just don’t stack up. They released a couple terrific singles at one point or another (see: “Emergency” and “I’m Alive”) but they are surprisingly lame and stiff as they run through 6 set pieces with about as much energy as a generic battery. The material’s not that good, either: this is mid-tempo, somewhat poppy, and absolutely run-of-the-mill rock n’ roll of the sort that got confused with punk in the late 1970s.

From time to time, the usually limp rhythm section seems to listen to what the poor monitors are telling them -- likely a shouted “Pick up the pace, you lumbering, uninspired rock-beasts!” Other than these brief surges of energy, which manage to make this 12” listenable, if still forgettable, there’s nothing there to separate 999 from a million other tired, been-done yobs just having a go at the pub-rock crack.

They should have stayed at the local.
