Best Adventure Commander

Discussion

Obviously there’s [[Gorion, wise mentor]], [[Beluna grandsquall]], and [[Lozhan, dragon’s legacy]], but what are some other commanders that synergize with adventures/provide a solid win con? There’s a lot of new adventures in WOE, but they all seem to do very little on their own.

I’m running them all under [[Aragorn the Uniter]]

Well, how does it fair?

that might be fun, mind sharing the list?

Gorion can be really strong as a spell copy commander and I'm really hoping to grab an [[Elusive Otter]] for it to really get juice out of that Prowess. [[Virtue of Knowledge]], [[Virtue of Loyalty]], and [[Virtue of Strength]] are also going to be very, very good in it, especially Knowledge's adventure.

I really like Beluna's design. It offers much more card advantage from the command zone than Gorion. I'm sure they will play very differently and there are some cool cards in Temur. Not sure if she's stronger, though. Just looking at the adventure cards in Temur, I don't think she'll be able to churn out as much pure value as Gorion does almost for free.

Lozhan's card pool is too limited to get serious value and there's way better Izzet burn commanders. I think it has a spot in Beluna's 99 tho.

[[Extus, Oriq Overlord]] is fun, since the deck wants both creatures and spells, so adventures pull double duty.

I love having a sorcery as my commander

Using the blood avatar is probably the better option, but the front half is no slouch either. A spellslinger deck where your support creatures keep coming back can be potent.

Oh absolutely. But i do it because its funny as shit saying "i will now cast commander" and its a sorcery or a hammer or just a literal freaking boat. Bonus points if the totally-not-a-creature proceeds to fuck up the table

I don't know if it's the best, but [[Kess, Dissident Mage]] has some synergy with adventures. I don't have a list though.

That’s actually really clever!

In a similar vein, [[Gale, Waterdeep Prodigy]] can work if you don't mind running only two colors. For the background, [[Passionate Archaeologist]] can throw out some damage when you cast the permanent side of adventures, or [[Scion of Halaster]] can offer some card selection and help stock up the graveyard. A buddy tried it out when there weren't really enough viable adventure cards printed, but it might be more workable now.

Edit: I was mistaken, Gale doesn't work since he has to be able to target the card in the graveyard before it can be cast. The adventure cards aren't instants or sorceries until they hit the stack, so Gale just sees creature cards. Kess and Lier work since the game just checks if the spells are legal as you cast them, and at that point the adventures are instants or sorceries.

I stumbled upon this threads kinda late but wanted to let you know that Gale doesn't work with adventures as those cards aren't Instant or Sorcery cards in graveyard. Lier works for example because it doesn't care about the type until spell is cast.

After looking into it a little more, you're correct. That pesky "target card of the other type" bit of the ability ruins it. Thanks for catching that.

Wait, kess can cast adventure creatures if they die?

Yes

715.3a "When casting an Adventure card as an Adventure, only the alternative characteristics are evaluated to see if it can be cast. "

Also, it won't get exiled by Kess' own effect when casting it as an adventure since it's getting exiled, not being put into the GY

This will also work for cards like Gale

In that case, Katilda and lier or just lier can also run a table I imagine

Elusive otter, lier, phyrexian alter, defiler of dreams can draw you until you die.

[[Vega, the Watcher]] isn’t a wincon, but it does give a fair bit of card advantage.

The best adventure wincon, imo, is [[Possibility Storm]] into [[Primal Surge]] or some other giant, stupid sorcery. [[Enter the Infinite]] is fun too, but doesn't lend itself as well to a no-sorcery deck. Good shell for [[Animar]], maybe?

I use them in Borbor and fblthp cascade. They provide utility while keeping the average cmc of the deck high. This way I can cascade into what I want instead of hitting ramp

The [[faldorn]] precon came with a bunch of adventures and wants to cast things from exile, i personally swapped it out for the alt commander of [[durnan of the yawning portal]] and [[passionate archeologist]]. If you want a good commander that cares abput cards in exile you ofc have [[prosper, tome-bound]]. Out of the new ones Beluna clearly really cares abput adventures but idk if it is the best one, just the most obvious one.

Been testing out Eruth, Tormented Prophet as an adventure/cast from exile commander. Seems to work well.

Does she let you cast adventures after exiling them though? I thought you could only cast a creature with adventure from exile if you cast the adventure half first.

I've had a lot of fun with [[Chulane, teller of tales]], throw in Intruder Alert, & have a mana dorks and you can get off some interesting things.

Wait, how does Adventure spells and [[Arcane Bombardment]] work? I was thinking about building [[Beluna, Grandsquall]], and wanted to include that card. When you cast the copies on an Adventure with Arcane Bombardment, do they go on an Adventure allowing you to cast the copies as creatures as well?

No because they are copies, not the original spell. If arcane bombardment let you cast the actual card from exile, then yes, you could cast the adventure and have it go on an adventure to be cast later as a creature.
