In my own experience, I would say the school is good at giving students resources when asked for them. U City is a low income school and that comes with benefits of having free testing, college application fee waivers, and access to free trade or early college education. However, the school has a large gap in abilities of students in honors/AP classes and those in standard classes. As a peer tutor, I've noticed regular track students struggling with writing and math in a way that their honor student peers aren't. The school is currently reworking educational methods and offers free tutoring to students after school with transportation home. There are a lot of great teachers you can have but there's also some not great teachers who can (and have) ruined a student's year. Extracurriculars are diverse at the school with many student ran clubs and sports offered throughout the year. Overall, I had a pretty positive experience but I can see where others wouldn't.
This is my high school currently, and I love it so much. I have had some of the best teachers who taught really well and have made so many great friends. The current principal is very good at his job and tries to keep everyone safe and accommodated all the time. I've felt safe and secure in school, and theres almost always kindness and laughs I hear.
The school overall is a welcoming place that is highly inclusive and I have never witnessed bully. Although there is problems with fights, which in my opinion is stemmed from inadequate student engagement and inadequate staff. I would like to see Friday night football games to ramp up students energy during the fall and other dances like winter formal to get more student engagement and better the high school experience. You’re only in high school once and we need to make it count.
