This is a true solo album in the sense that there is a core line-up (Murphy is an amazing guitarist, Steve DiGiorgio is a virtuoso bass player and Deen Castronovo is a versatile drummer), but a string of other players complete the material, often there are varied musicians involved from one song to another. Vitalij Kuprij from the ultra-tech Artension is a frequent collaborator on keyboards. The crisp production also helps a lot, with the bass sound and the rhythm guitars brought heavily to the forefront.
There are 5 vocal songs and 5 instrumentals arranged one by one after each other. In the instrumentals, the musicians occasionally let loose. Race with Devil on Spanish Highway is one such amazing showcase, the classic Al Di Meola centerpiece is given a metallic bite besides the jazz fusion (Chris Kontos of Machine Head fame delivers a thunderous drum performance there). Not limited to only this cover, there is a lot of jazzy fusion-like influence here, mostly in the instrumentals. Odyssey is the other prominent example (that one being a Dixie Dregs cover).
The vocal tracks are hard progressive metal songs, most of them with monstrous grooves (Through Your Eyes), but there are very melodic vocals at times (John West in Visitors) - the material is so varied that it's worth going into details for each song, some even have elements of thrash (Murphy also played in a lot of thrash and death metal bands - and his trademark riff style is instantly recognizable).
Greatest songs: Through Your Eyes (Distant Mirrors), Feeding the Machine, No One Can Tell You

Clever tricksy prog/metal though at times a little monotonous.
Excellent playing by all involved though a cover of Al DiMeola's 'Race with the Devil' lacks the menacing punch of the original.
Brilliant cover art rounds off the package.

Feeding the machine is his second solo effort so far and a damn good album all the way. On this album every piece shines and James Murphy provs once again that he is among the best in his field and an inovative guitarist, Some pieces are here real treasures with some very fine and intristing solos and riffs combined with intelligent arrangements made from this seconf album a real awesome release in metal zone and progressive metal in particular. Again the list of musicians from Feeding the machine is top notch like:Chuck Billy ( vocals from Testament), John West ( voice of Artension on some albums and now in Royal Hunt), Steve DiGiorgio( he is the god of bass and member in Sadus and colaborations with many bands like Death for ex or Artension), jeremy Coulson and Stuart Hamm (both from prog metal band Dali's Dilemma) - so, a line-up hard to beat. Feeding the machine released in february 1999 is better than the predecesor, because the album is more polished and more inventice in same time. His fingers on guitar shows that he is s big name in last 20 years. The album is now more towards progressive metal with some metal leanings here and there. Some outstandig key passages are here on some pieces. Aswell here is a cover of Al DiMeola - Race With Devil on Spanish Highway from Elegant gypsy 1977, in Murphy's interpretation here this version kick ass all the way, even better than the original and from Dixie Dregs - Odyssey. All the pieces shines here and James Murphy shines aswell on every second and note he mange to create. Feeding the machine is an album who is in my collection since he was relesed 10 years ago and has a special place and a constant movement in my CD playr. Recommended one of the best album from the '90's and damn curious this album is less rated then the predecesor, and aswell very low, strange , because this release is awesome all the way.
