Characters
Most expected, and unexpected, characters are back in the movie which has been excellent, each one acted as you would have expected and felt very plausible, considering is a three decade old movie and some of them did not really do more movies, so hats off all of them, you could believe this was filmed the day after the end of the previous chapter (again considering the years gap for them).
Story
Really believable without being a full copy, hence the spin off mentioned up here, there are all the elements of the first movie presented in a different key with same morale and some added one to the plot. Wesley is simply amazing (also how he did not age since Demolition Man?) and his character makes sense; for the less knowledgeable about the world besides what's told on the (fake) news (sad lives without culture) as some African's countries have these faction leaders and land dispute especially on border areas, of course here it was presented as "comic", as one would expect, but serve well to support the story and the new morale introduced with this movie - thankfully not politically driven by the cancel the history people but some good old style morale base on common sense and decency. This without spoiling anything so have to stay vague.
Location
This is more focused on Zamunda than New York, again this is not COMING TO AMERICA is a sequel and a spin off, hence they are offering the same basics (spin off) and a new main location (Zamunda) and I have to say they did that in a very clever way, on a storytelling point of view, by hitting the right spots on people who love the first movie.
What's Different
Once again is both a SPIN OFF AND A SEQUEL so expect a bit more of "modern key" in the "old tricks" - this was kind of given considering is 2021 not the 90s anymore (and I say unfortunately as people are way less smart and way more whiners). Besides that I personally think they did a very good job by keeping differences subtle as everything revolves behind strong morale, as the first did.
It is not the first, so if you want something like the first watch the first, it is a very entertaining movie and unlike some other "2" they really managed not to ruin the foundation of the first movie.
The wit, charm, warmth and realization of real world issues seen in the first movie are all lost in this tragic attempt. Instead we have tenuous links to other movies that seem shoehorned in, wit and charm are replaced by silliness and boorish scenes as for warmth – the movie seems like the sludge of a sickly out of date cold soup that has been reheated to a tepid unpalatable mess. There are some references to real world issues relating to the ‘them and us’ of wealth and poverty, the scramble of youth trying to raise itself to betterment, the sad loss of loved ones and the all too real problem of potentially warring nations for example. Sadly none of these issues are handled well. The issues are more glossed over than tackled. Yes! I am aware that his movie is meant to be a comedy but when we see the real issue of poverty shown as a clichéd delightfully fun environment to live in, the struggle for betterment solved by a fairytale situation only to then have a clumsy attempt at denying this fairytale for the sake of love that is, at best, convoluted and would not necessarily bring a good solution, family loss ridiculed and where we see a warlord portrayed in a manner so silly as to be ludicrous [not funny] our willingness to suspend believe, take in the fun and enjoy the respite of escapism is tested beyond breaking point.
To be fair, there are some nice moments in the movie with a few ‘in jokes’ as it were and some fair call-backs to the original movie and other movies it is just sad that these are ,as mentioned, shoehorned in. There are some quite nice visual effects such as the representation of a flourishing wilderness and the wide shots of the kingdom and palace. Then there is the whole lion’s whiskers debacle – no need to explain here. There is use of a word I cannot write in this review that at first could shock some but this shock element seems to be only done for the controversy, the word is then repeated as if to force the viewer into realising its meaning or to try and make it funny. However; the word in question is overused, uncontroversial and, ultimately, unfunny and not needed.
The movie also makes a lukewarm attempt at being something of a musical with some ‘big’ names and musical numbers. Again though – the scenes seem shoehorned in, add very little to the movie and appear to be a sort of ‘you remember these acts don’t you? Isn’t it amazing? How clever we are.’ situation. Instead of a delightful reminiscence we get acts thrust at us. No! That is not amazing or clever.
This movie could have been wonderful, amazing, a fantastic trip down memory lane, a truly remarkable nod to the original and, simply put, great. It is none of these. If you want to leave your brain on your pillow and kill some time go ahead and watch this tripe. You’d be better off giving this movie a miss and thinking of what could have been. Better still - go watch the original.
There is one redeeming feature of ‘Coming 2 America’! The streaming provider has not done something that is coming all too popular and charged a disgustingly high premium rate to view this movie.
EDIT: Slight alteration of spelling errors and added recommendation to watch original.
