Oyster River High School Reviews
Rating 3.32 out of 5 189 reviews
Oyster River is like a lawless society where students are bullied every day, mostly due to negligent supervision and indifference from the authorities. It not only includes verbal insults, humiliation and stealing, but also occurs in the form of brutal beatings. Many students bearing witness to these assaults overall feel no concern for it, in fact some even think it's funny and try to incite violence among others. They'll make the victim the butt of jokes and continue to favor the bully. Unfortunately you can't count on the adults to help either. It's been made apparent that the administration wouldn't care at all if bullies become dangerous criminals or if the violence turns deadly, which has actually come close to happening in the past! Like seriously, we've seen and heard of many horrors in ORHS that we would never have possibly imagined.
Even though we got to meet some really kind staff members and students, it doesn't change that there are many troubles that frequently bring chaos and mayhem which the school doesn't bother to fix. For example, we know of students taking drugs and prejudice against LGBTQ students. They give lectures on bullying every year but in reality the administration and their associates don't do anything useful to support or protect students who are bullied and rationalize what bullies are doing. In certain occasions when bullies brutally assault students and injure them very badly to the point they are sent to the emergency room or require hospitalization, the school still chooses not to help the victim. It's also worrisome to see bystanders making light of the bullying as long as they're not the ones being bullied. A lot of students really don't respect their peers or want to be kind to others.
Aside from the small number of staff who really do care and support students, there's pretty much nothing else about the school that any decent person won't find appalling. As long as it doesn't hurt their public image, the school won't bother to resolve problems that endanger students every day and when faced with one they'll only hide it rather than handle it. A student gets viciously beaten by a bully with a record of displaying this type of behavior and winds up in a hospital bed, and the administration is more worried about the victim standing up for themselves than the bully being a threat to the safety and welfare of students. Don't let your kids go to this school! Chances are you'll find better schools than Oyster River in the state.
