Anything Mary Lou Williams does is a jazz history lesson. She was a woman in a man's world (jazz was very often like a boyz club). She was humble & her work was inspiring to all her contemporaries. Everything she played/composed was drawn from the entire tradition/language of what we call jazz. This recording is a great example & a great place to start if you don't know of her. Her Zodiac suite written/performed earlier in her her career is a show stopper. Then take the leap to the Pablo recording of her playing in duet with Cecil Taylor & a rhythm section!! To quote younger people 'OMG'. Buster Williams (bass) & Mickey Roker(drums) - what rhythm section are SUPERB!! Standards, Miles's 'All Blues', Bobby Timmons ' Dat Dere', standards & her own beautiful originals. This is a beautiful set of monster piano trio playing. BUY IT, YOU WILL BE HAPPY.

Mary Lou can swing, especially on this session where she accepted a lower session rate in exchange for complete creative control. It's like a source document of swing. You literally can listen to it on repeat all day and never tire of it.

One of my all-time favorites. I can just put it on and let play forever. The very slow rendition of Baby Man is one of my favorites, but it's so hard to pick a favorite. Like another reviewer noted, she's just one of the many jazz musicians who never was recognized for her great talent.

In my college days I has many friends who were jazz musicians, and I learned a lot about the canon: Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington. I did not hear anything about Mary Lou Williams, but I somehow stumbled across this LP, bought it, loved it, and played it constantly. I did not purchase it as a CD, but 20+ years later I found the LP as a download, and now--once again--I am listening to it all the time.

Mary swings so hard, and her lines are so beautiful--what she hears and plays is unique in jazz. Subtle, but completely enchanting. She demands that you listen and rewards your attention with thoughtful, spiritual grooves--one after another. The best!

Hard to believe that somebody could add something to Miles Davis' and Gil Evans' "All Blues" but Mary Lou Williams does it. This woman is one of the unsung geniuses of modern jazz. Why she has not received the same acclaim as people like Coltrane and Monk is beyond me. Sexism? Probably. Do yourself a favour and pick up one of her albums. If you love jazz, you will love Mary Lou Williams.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wurzeln im Blues
Reviewed in Germany on March 3, 2009

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep Soul
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 3, 2014
This is one of those albums you could play to someone who didn't know what jazz was, but wanted to know more. A lifetime of experience in this deep soul music shines out from these fantastic performances. Not showy, not fast, no clutter or flash, just a bucketful of the real thing.
