Our recent family 5 night stay at the Viceroy surpassed our expectations.
From our early arrival and being able to store our luggage until check in. To the complementary upgrade our family of 4 - all in one room - were wowed and made to feel extremely welcome and right at home.
Great location. Quiet room. Comfy beds. Spacious well appointed and luxurious bathroom. Windows that actually open to get some fresh air! It had all we could ask for and more!

We stayed here as part of a group booking. The hotel room was great, on the smaller side and typical of what you would find in any large city like LA/NY etc. The room was a little tight for the 4 of us but was comfortable. The location was great, it was within walking distance (just across the street) and two blocks from the beach and a short stroll from the Santa Monica Pier. There is a great bowling alley a few blocks as well which is walkable. The hotel itself has some nice common areas, the pool is more "cool" than large and it's not really conducive for kids splashing around. This hotel gets high marks for boutique like atmosphere as well as close proximity to major nearby attractions.

We were greeted immediately upon entering the lobby by William Frishkorn. His warm smile and attentive calm erased the wear of travel from our minds. He swiftly checked to see if our room was ready, however, we were early so arranged for our bags to be stored and suggested we take a bike ride along the beach while we wait on the complimentary bikes. We did just that, and it was lovely!

The staff overall were outstanding, they were so polite and helpful!

The room we reserved was ready in a timely manner and the sofa bed was set up and ready for us as well. We reserved an ocean view room and I would highly recommend. The bathroom was very large and completely tiled in marble. We loved the chest of drawers in the bathroom as it made sharing the room with family more private for dressing after a shower. The chairs were nice but showed a good deal of wear. The beds were comfortable and the room had robes and a safe in the closet. I was glad that the fridge was not turned on as I never use it and do not like the noise, but I did have to ask for a tea service, which I appreciated when the water kettle with tea etc. was brought up to the room as there is no coffee or tea in the room. If they do not provide it in the room, it would be nice to have complimentary coffee or tea in the lobby available for guests for this level of hotel. I was disappointed in the size of the pool and the very limited seating available around the pool. The smaller pool which is always in the shade should have been kept heated or made into a hot tub.

The location is very good, however, if you could afford a beach front hotel do so, if not this property is the next best thing. We could walk to Santa Monica Pier and did so a number of times. Also it is centrally located if you are visiting multiple sites. We rented a car and used the onsite valet to park it. They were fast and attentive whenever we wished to have our car.

This was only a two night stay for a family vacation. We had two adjoining rooms. Note the location was not as great as it is farther from the beach than many of the other hotels in the area in including Shutters, Casa Del Mar, JW Marriott and Loews.

Issues experienced in just two nights include: 20 minute wait for pool towels, lack of responses to emails sent to Reservations, no replenishment of bottles of water in room (they were super small bottles), many broken loaner bikes (why do we pay a resort fee?), 5th day trainee to check me in at the desk who didn't know much, poor WiFi in room, missing slippers upon arrival and inability to confirm late checkout the evening before. The water really irks me as we are paying almost $400 per room per night and the two bottles of hotel water must cost about 0.25 per bottle to the hotel. Also, regarding late checkout, why can't it be confirmed the evening before? The hotel should know just about every check-in for the next day by then. It wasn't even near full when I arrived. And why should I get the new trainee to check us in who didn't tell us about any of the amenities?

I thought that I had a good value, but given the service issues, I really did not. This was our first stay at the Viceroy, and we will have to think hard before visiting any location in the future.

This place used to be one of my favorite hotels in SM. My recent stay changed that very quickly. If you're looking for a premium experience, seriously, look elsewhere. They've clearly cut costs so much that there's no room service, robes, slippers, minibar, or coffee in the rooms. Nothing. Even a Holiday in Express has a coffee machine in the room. You can only order food from the bar (which has been remodeled to look like a MOTEL bar) and they refuse to bring it up to your room. Housekeeping will only clean your room upon request and they don't clean it, they make the bed and replace the towels, that's it. BUT they still charge 5-star prices for EVERYTHING. Most of the staff was ok but a lot of them were either just clueless or downright rude. When someone on my team asked why there was no water or robe in her room, the concierge responded, "um it's called a global pandemic." And they remodeled the bar and lobby to look less premium for some reason with a grumpy old bar tender who seems like he does not want to be there. We got two bottles of champaign for mimosas and they charged us over $65 for the orange juice ALONE! For this money you can definitely find a more premium, upscale experience at any of the other hotels nearby. Trust me you will be disappointed.

Family of four (middle and high school age) traveling from the Bay Area. We stayed right across the street at Shutters a month prior and enjoyed our stay, but based on room, price and overall experience, Viceroy is hands down our preferred choice in Santa Monica. Nice location just a block away from beach access. From the moment we pulled into Valet, we felt welcomed. The staff made it a point to greet us despite a minor traffic jam of 3 cars ahead of us. BJ was especially courteous and helpful when we arrived, making sure my family and I were taken care of, offering us drinks and carefully handling our luggage. The lobby was nice, airy and open, with plenty of seating and a cool, relaxed beachy-chic vibe. While our room wasn’t ready on time, the friendly front desk staff worked with us to make up for the delay. We stayed in a Grande King room with Ocean View, which was bright, spacious, and very well laid out with plenty of storage. Housekeeping setup the sofabed for us and attended to our room daily, so it always felt fresh and clean. Lugged our chairs and gear just a short walk across the street and were enjoying quality beach time in minutes. Perfect location without having to spend hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars more per night (sorry Shutters and Casa Del Mar). Over the course of our stay, BJ and his valet staff along with the the front desk staff, treated us like family. On the morning of checkout, BJ personally loaded and carted our bags from the room and packed them in the car for us. Excellent experience at Viceroy and looking forward to the next time!

This hotel is located within walking distance of the Santa Monica pier but far enough away that you aren’t bombarded by tourists taking photos.

We were offered a room well before the designated check in time and given complimentary champagne. There is a resort fee but a portion of that is waived if you sign up for the Viceory rewards program. The service at check in and at the bar were exceptional. The bar has an extensive wine and cocktail list.

The rooms are typical for a luxury hotel but nothing to write home about. Beds were comfortable and rooms were quiet. No complaints in terms of the room. We were told the hotel was about to undergo a renovation in 2020.

I stayed at the Viceroy shortly before the pandemic and felt that it was a bit too 'upmarket' for me at the time. Nevertheless, I returned in February 2023 because I know that it is ideally located, close to the beach and the pier, and I just wanted to relax and enjoy down time. It had changed quite a lot and felt much more like a 'regular' hotel.

Around 30 minutes after my late night arrival the hotel's wifi went down, so I went to sleep. Due to time zone difference, I awoke at 04:30am on my first morning and discovered there was no coffee machine in the room. Outside, there was torrential rain, so I cold not go and look for coffee. As there was no internet, I couldn't search for anything. I went downstairs and, after ten minutes, was given a cup of coffee by the staff.

A few hours later I ordered room service and this was great. The omelette was fantastic, the lady who delivered the meal was very friendly, kind, and considerate.

I went for a walk to the pier as the sun started breaking through the clouds and was reminded of the hotel's great location. When I returned, the internet was still down and, as there was no coffee in the room, I left again and went out to have lunch. The internet finally returned around one hour after I returned from lunch (but requires that you log in again each morning , which was a slight pain for me as I had taken my apple TV).

I went to the bar a couple of times and it was pleasant, with a friendly atmosphere and staff. I recommend the wings, but not the octopus.
I also sat at the pool for a while, with my feet in the water, the pools were crystal clear, warm, and inviting.

The cleaning staff came every day and were lovely to talk to, they were very professional and courteous.

The staff also helped me tremendously on my final day when I was absolute soaked after a 2 hour walk in the rain, I had already checked out of my room, and they gave me plastic bags for my wet clothes.

The hotel is very good, but, for the lack of coffee alone, I will try a different hotel when I return to Santa Monica in the coming months.

Arrival was unique I’m sure from being offered water or Prosecco was the perfect way to start our stay. Efficiently we were checked in but no rush to the room as the bubbles from the Prosecco were still bubbling, A room on the 7th floor was our heaven on 7th for two nights and really wished that it was more. Everything in the room although being from the UK we missed the coffee machine but the coffee bar downstairs was well upto muster in providing exceptional coffee. Our stay was a rest from the 7 days we had toured around seeing California and so this was thr respite before the journey home. We decided to park the car offsite to ensure that we didn’t have access to the car to stop us from going out but the hotel has valet parking which looked very organised. We had drinks at the bar and decided to ask if we could have dinner which consisted of three exceptional dishes which we shared. It’s a kind of tapas set up but the two of us enjoyed it so much. The chef is exceptional with dishes which just worked were very inventive. Breakfast was exceptional too as it consisted of many different dishes that excluded egg as I’m allergic. Both dinner and breakfast menus were wonderful and reasonably priced. Now because this hotel is a boutique hotel, the pool area was small but that said, had everything you needed including hoists for the disabled. The pool chairs were like beds and the palm trees and the music gave the whole feel a Californian vibe, just loved it. The amenity fee covers many different things but most valuable to this hotel is the loan of the hotel bicycles, loads to access and two minutes from the promenade which is a 10 minute walk to Santa Monica pier. We loved the hotel, the facilities, the comfy bed and the exceptional service which we were provided with from start to finish. It is deserving of every accolade that this hotel has and more probably. Can’t wait for a revisit.

The reason for my mid level review is there were too many little issues, that just hindered our stay. We stayed over Christmas & NY.
Location is great, close to the shops, restaurants and the beach. Hotel is modern and boutique style, a little tired in places. The room was comfortable, sound proofing was not great, you can hear everything! Beds were small and water pressure in the shower was not good, plus the plug didn't work, so no bath for the kids.
As for the pool.. TINY... looks so much bigger in the pictures, I wouldn't want to be there in the summer, I can image it would be like a can or sardines!
Service was generally great, restaurant and bar staff went above and beyond, reception and concierge, not so much. When we checked in we were offered champagne, but it never arrived, were told we had qualified for an upgrade, but that didn't happen either. When I enquired about the morning yoga sessions that were advertised I was told they weren't running this week. Also when looking for deals from the concierge, we were told she could get us discounts at Universal and for a Lakers game, turned out that was not the case and we got them cheaper booking ourselves online.
We had a great stay and the location was great, but as I said, lots of silly little issues.
