Synopsis

New York City radio and television interviewer Johnny Olsen tracks down the true story of Mona Kent, a glamorous Broadway star, by contacting people who knew her before she achieved success: Elvira Kowalski, a midwestern farm girl, comes to New York after winning a phony talent contest. Though disillusioned, she stays on, determined to make good. While living in Greenwich Village with Janice, another disappointed actress, she becomes friendly with a painter, Eddie, who finds her a job as a hatcheck girl. Aging gossip columnist Stephan Gregory invents the name Mona Kent for her and invites her to a party at his Long Island estate, where she attracts attention by diving, clad in her undergarments, into the swimming pool. As a result, she obtains a part in summer stock. Later, as she swims naked at a deserted beach, young photographer Jerry takes pictures of her, and they become friends after he promises not to make the photos public. Mona's blossoming acting career suffers a setback, and she returns to her job as a hatcheck girl, meanwhile agreeing to pose for Eddie. She is incredulous when Stephan proposes marriage, but when she learns that both Eddie and Jerry have sold the nude pictures of her, she agrees to marry the columnist who promises to make her a star.
