Shane Meadows’ blending of working-class drama, romantic comedy, crime film, and Western parody in Once Upon a Time in the Midlands is ambitious, mostly well-acted, but only fitfully engaging.
Jimmy (Robert Carlyle), a small-time Glasgow criminal, awakes on his sofa to see his ex-girlfriend Shirley (Shirley Henderson) on a television talk show. He watches in horror as Shirley’s current beau, Dek (Rhys Ifans), proposes to her, only to be relieved when she rejects him. After escaping with the loot following a robbery bungled by his gang, Jimmy makes his way to Nottingham to try to win Shirley back.
