At this school, I was struggling mentally with anxiety and depression. I had a meltdown to my guidance counselor that resulted in me being referred to a school counselor to help talk out my issues. However, this counselor was only available two days out of the week, and my conditions were not improving. Not only was I neglected to receive proper mental healthcare, they constantly locked the bathrooms. When I got out of classes, lines would be out the doors. I felt extremely isolated and I could not leave school early without being berated and interrogated by people on duty. I made almost zero friends here and sat by myself at lunch most days. We were patted down at school dances, which were supposed to be nights of fun. We were treated like prisoners rather than high school students. There was hardly any diverse populations many consisting of hispanic and white people. Students were constantly using bathroom stalls as hotboxes to vape. I am so glad that I am out of this school!
Although I believe I had a quality level of education, the environment of the school definitely lessened the quality of my experience at San Clemente High School. There is a lack of diversity and not the best social environment, forcing me to feel left out for most of my high school years. Most of the clubs like ASB are held by those who are just "popular" rather than people who try to do things to better the school. Most of my teachers have been kind and want to teach, though a few of them (mostly science teachers) aren't very clear on the coursework and force the students to learn a lot of information on their own. I would like to see a more diverse culture at the school and have more students involved rather than just those that have a lot of friends that vote for them.
I appreciated my time at San Clemente High School. The school is rich in culture and known around my county for its hometown pride. Sports programs are wonderful, while the arts stay relatively underfunded. San Clemente is full of kind people- both students and faculty alike. There are a few bad seeds, like anywhere else, but it is an overall positive and encouraging environment to experience your high school years.
