NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Actor James Broderick, known in recent years as the father on the television series 'Family,' died Monday after a lengthy bout with cancer. He was 55.

Broderick died at 7 a.m. in Yale-New Haven Hospital where he had undergone nearly a month of treatment. He had been a patient in the university hospital since Oct. 12.

A hospital spokesman said Broderick was admitted to the hospital three times in the past year for treatment of cancer.

Broderick, born March, 7, 1927, lived in New York City, the spokesman said.

In 1977, Broderick played the father in the ABC-TV series 'Family' with Kristy McNichol.

He also appeared in the films 'Dog Day Afternoon' with Al Pacino and 'Alice's Restaurant' with singer Arlo Guthrie.

A veteran of the New York stage, Broderick appeared on Broadway in the plays 'Johnny No Trump' and 'Let Me Hear You Smile.'

In 1961, he toured 15 countries with Helen Hayes in a production of The Glass Managerie.
