Pizzazz is an album that touches on many styles of black contemporary music from the late seventies, and avoids being a bland melange by the sheer quality of the songs and Patrice Rushen's honed musicianship.
Patrice Rushen was one of those artists, like Stevie Wonder or Prince, who were able to realise their ideas almost single-handedly, such was her fluency with many instruments. She also produced her own work, with assistance from long time collaborator Charles Mims Jr. and mentor Reggie Andrews, almost unheard of at time, especially so for a woman working for a major record label making R&B.
Pizzazz is by turns funky and sophisticated and a commercial triumph. It was also a defiant release in the face of criticism from jazz critics who balked at the thought of jazz pianist making pop music.

Tight funk beats, jazzy Fender Rhodes solos, catchy pop vocals, a pretty lady with a nice smile on the cover. Basically all I ever need from music. I'm not going to bother making a rushen pun.
