Sounds like The Big Bang Theory universe’s next expansion is still light years away.

Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed on April 12 that executive producer Chuck Lorre was developing a new comedy series “derived from” the CBS mega-hit. Beyond it being earmarked for Max, no further details about the spinoff were disclosed — and three weeks later, the Writers Guild of America went on a 148-day strike, which put any further development on hold for the duration of the industry walkout (which officially ended on Sept. 27).

“It’s prenatal,” Lorre, who’s currently promoting the new Max comedy series Bookie, tells TVLine of the prospective BBT offshoot. “Yeah, you don’t talk about the birth until the second trimester, I believe, is the rule. That’s a long way of saying no, I’ve got nothing to say about it other than it’s something that we are discussing.”

The new series marks the second extension of the BBT franchise, following Young Sheldon. The CBS prequel, which is entering its seventh (and potentially final) season, focuses on the East Texas upbringing of Jim Parsons breakout character, Sheldon Cooper.

Big Bang wrapped its 12-season, 279-episode run in May 2019. At the time, Lorre told TVLine that a solid spinoff conceit failed to materialize before the multi-cam completed production. “Unless there was a creative reason to do it — a wonderfully, wonderfully creative reason to do it — than the only reason [to do it] is economics, and that’s not good enough,” he explained. “This is hard work. And if you’re going to do it, you gotta love what you’re doing; you’ve gotta be passionate about it. And if you’re just chasing money, that’s not enough.”

That leads us to believe that Lorre & Co. must have a pretty spectacular idea in mind now. (TVLine previously shared a few ideas of its own, which you can read here.) In the meantime, hit the comments and tell us: What are your hopes for the next installment in the Big Bang saga?
