Sounds like The Big Bang Theory universe’s next expansion is still light years away.
Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed on April 12 that executive producer Chuck Lorre was developing a new comedy series “derived from” the CBS mega-hit. Beyond it being earmarked for Max, no further details about the spinoff were disclosed — and three weeks later, the Writers Guild of America went on a 148-day strike, which put any further development on hold for the duration of the industry walkout (which officially ended on Sept. 27).
“It’s prenatal,” Lorre, who’s currently promoting the new Max comedy series Bookie, tells TVLine of the prospective BBT offshoot. “Yeah, you don’t talk about the birth until the second trimester, I believe, is the rule. That’s a long way of saying no, I’ve got nothing to say about it other than it’s something that we are discussing.”
The new series marks the second extension of the BBT franchise, following Young Sheldon. The CBS prequel, which is entering its seventh (and potentially final) season, focuses on the East Texas upbringing of Jim Parsons breakout character, Sheldon Cooper.
Big Bang wrapped its 12-season, 279-episode run in May 2019. At the time, Lorre told TVLine that a solid spinoff conceit failed to materialize before the multi-cam completed production. “Unless there was a creative reason to do it — a wonderfully, wonderfully creative reason to do it — than the only reason [to do it] is economics, and that’s not good enough,” he explained. “This is hard work. And if you’re going to do it, you gotta love what you’re doing; you’ve gotta be passionate about it. And if you’re just chasing money, that’s not enough.”
That leads us to believe that Lorre & Co. must have a pretty spectacular idea in mind now. (TVLine previously shared a few ideas of its own, which you can read here.) In the meantime, hit the comments and tell us: What are your hopes for the next installment in the Big Bang saga?
Frankly, I hope it is the Coopers, which would be Young Sheldon minus Sheldon. Sheldon has become the least interesting aspect of that show. A show revolving around Georgie, Mandy, Missy and Mee Maw could work. Mary would also be in it, but as more of a supporting character.
Montana Jordan (Georgie) deserves a starring role in something. He has future hero/leading man written all over him.
Young Penny?
So………..parties and sweating out pregnancy tests every two weeks?
No thank you.
IF anything… The Big Bang Theory: The Next Generation to give Lorre, the Creatives, and Co. some much needed Creative and Expansive Canon and Continuity Narrative breathing room. Have the kids of the main characters be the focus and be the ones to carry the Story forward, whilst having Parsons, Cuoco, Galecki, etc. make appearances as their characters in parental roles.
Really love this universe, and will look forward to anything they do! Can’t wait!
The Wolowitzes
I’m not sure Howard and Bernadette could carry a whole show by themselves.
Plus Melissa Rauch is presently on Night Court.
Let it be abour Raj and him finding someone
And would be hilarious if was Missy Cooper I know only one interaction but still.
I do love The Big Bang Theory with every fiber of my heart, and I do love Young Sheldon equally. But also.. Young Sheldon has been a pleasant surprise. They found their voice and it quickly became an amazing show…. the moment it decided to grow into something else from tbbt. While I think they should remain faithful to the canon, I also think part of its success has to do with the fact they chose a different tone and approach. This to say in the end, Young Sheldon has probably been an exception. Please let it go TBBT. There are so many other stories they can tell without keeping to squeeze this one cow. Next time they won’t be as lucky as with YS.
All I’m hoping for with any spinoff is that they expand distribution beyond MAX. BBT & YS are great shows and I enjoy binge-watching reruns. If a spinoff comes out only on MAX, thousands of fans may lose the chance for another potentially great show
I agree wholeheartedly!!!
Going with the comic store spinoff. Keeps the geeky theme but allows guest characters to come into the store and talk to the employees. Kinda like Blockbuster but nerdier.
I would like to see Amy and Sheldon’s kids. And they’ll be friends with the other TBBT kids.
Penny and Leonard move back to Nebraska for some reason, leading to a lot of “fish out of water” storylines.
It’s done. It’s over. Move on to other ideas and other shows.
Agreed!!!
I’d like to see, if the two are agreeable, a post Nobel Prize family comedy, concentrating on married couple Sheldon and Amy Farrah Fowler-Cooper with their little kids (Leonard and a little girl – with some Penny in her, and with characters from BBT passing through in limited fashion.
I would love to either see “The Coopers” which would be about the remaining family once Sheldon goes off to college OR fast forward to the kids of the original cast of TBBT.
Hope you come up with an idea soon because the show is strongly missed! Marty
Here’s one random idea: Why not do an animated show version? Easiest option to incorporate all the TBBT characters (especially Bernadette).
Spinoff “Georgie”, he so could carry his own show!
Another idea is show with Lisa Metcalf as Senior Mary and Christine Baranski (Leonard mom) a show with the them living together. Like something finances (bad investments, no/ little retirement savings) causing Beverly to move in with Mary. Those 2 characters were Hilarious episodes of BBT! Can you imagine all the available content with conservative Mary in small town east Texas living with Beverly highly educated liberal intellectual from northeast?!
Maybe both spinoff! We need good sitcoms nowadays!!!
Has anybody ever noticed the picture of Jim Parson from “The Big Bang Theory” on young Sheldon’s wall in his and Missy’s bedroom
I don’t think I am going to watch any Lorre shows he always cancel the great shows
To soon for new show of Big Bang. We love the show very much. BUT why on MAX? Not everyone has MAX. I can only afford regular cable. Not fair to the fans!
Remember the episode of Young Sheldon where it ended with a vignette what all the other characters were doing at that very moment in their childhood? Very cool how they did that…
They could do an entire sitcom series based on that. Each episode could cover 5-7 minutes of each of their young lives. That would be very cool!
