The Night the Dams Burst Kindle Edition
THIS BOOK tells the Real History of the heroic RAF moonlight attack on Germany’s Ruhr Dams in May 1943, immortalised by the movie The Dambusters. The author’s account is based on his interviews with Bomber Command officers and official British and German documents, and on exclusive access to the private papers and diaries of Dr Barnes Wallis – the British scientist who invented the unique “bouncing bomb” which smashed the dams. Best book I've read in months. Short but great. All I can say is wow. The ingenuity to create such a bomb. It is clear the Germans knew the dams wluld be targeted ahead of tome. To have repairs completed so quickly.

Irving does his usual complete narrative.

Known British historian, David Irving is a person whose name gives the shudders to many people. As a widely-read historian without a university diploma, who was preparing himself for the historian craft working among other professions as a steelmaker in the German smelter, makes the official academic historians envious. The reason for this envy is simple: Official academic historians tend to write books which have only one avid reader - the dust in the library. As a brave and independent scholar, Mr. Irving without any constraints uses his right to present his own views and opinion on the events of the past in his books. This is unquestionably an added value of his works to the discussion of our not so distant and turbulent past. In his book entitled ''The night the dams burst'' he offered a nice and relatively brief description of a history of the inventor of so-called ''bouncing'' bomb together with a story of those who successfully broke the dams with this type of bombs. The book itself, despite its modest length, which is an exception in case of works of Mr. Irving, is opulent with numerous details related to described historical events. The descriptions done by Mr. Irving are enriched by the following: his unquestionable aptitude for writing, knowledge about the basics of physics (what is not so common amongst academic historians), and the use of historical sources that include among others the author's personal conversations with witnesses of those turbulent events. As a reader, I wish I (and also others) had more such works to read in the future.

What I like about this book is that it gets them the point straight away and the detail gleaned from original sources is excellent. Well worth the trouble to read.
