Life's hard. Even when it's good there's always something with fangs hiding around the corner. Sometimes you just want to be reminded that others just like you are out there hurting, falling, sinking just like you. You don't want to watch a movie about a secret agent or a gangster who lead these dangerous, exiting lives that you can't relate to. Sometimes you just want to see real people on screen. I like a lot of these American indies because I connect heavily with many of the characters who are often drifting, undecided, nursing their hidden scars. Katrina (played by Carrie Browstein of Sleater-Kinney and Portlandia) is a dog shelter worker with a cheating boyfriend and an obsession with reality television. Eli (James Mercer, frontman of the Shins) is a temp worker living on the margins, borrowing his experimental-filmmaker step-grandfather's car to get around. Camille is a worker at a thrift shop who is saddened by the detritus of people's past lives that her job constantly puts her in contact with (the box's plot synopsis fails to mention her rather substantial plot arc, possibly because the actress playing her, Renee Roman Nose, never wrote a Big Soundtrack Moment song). These three people, with their individual lives, bounce around Portland trying to find meaning.

I watched this solely because I have a massive crush on Carrie Brownstein. She was extremely adorable and endearing, so I guess it was worth it for that alone.
Honestly, usually when I hear about an indie film from Portland anymore, it tells me to run the hell away. Having grown up there and gone to film school there, I was exposed to so many pretentious projects that I've built a hesitancy to watch anymore. So it's funny that while living in New York, I come across this for six dollars and decide to watch it mostly because it's set in Portland. The mind is a funny thing. Luckily, this is a solid little film that showcases a couple slices of life in the city that thankfully doesn't indulge in quirkiness just for the sake of the setting.
