Georgia adds 2024 MAAC Rookie of the Year to roster

ATHENS, Ga. — De'Shayne Montgomery, who won Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie Of the Year honors at Mount St. Mary's last season, signed a letter of intent to continue his collegiate career with the Georgia Bulldogs, head coach Mike White announced on Thursday.

Montgomery is a 6-4, 190-pound guard from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., who averaged 12.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists and a team-leading 1.7 steals per game for the Mountaineers. He was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week a school-record six times, including each of the final four weeks of the season. Montgomery notched nine 20-point performances, including a season-high 27 points against Siena and a 23-point showing against Georgia on Dec. 20. Among MAAC statistical leaders, he ranked No. 11 in scoring, No. 6 in field goal percentage (.528), No. 6 in steals and No. 15 in free throw percentage (.728).

Montgomery played for Hargrave Military Academy's postgraduate team during the 2022-23 season. He averaged 16.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.8 steals while helping the Tigers compile a 44-2 record. Montgomery played two seasons of varsity basketball at Somerset Prep Academy Charter School, compiling 817 points (17.0 ppg), 332 rebounds (6.9 rpg), 218 assists (4.5 apg), 147 steals (3.1 spg) and 96 blocks (2.0 mpg) in 48 career outings. As a senior, he averaged 19.5 ppg, 6.1 mpg, 4.8 mpg, 2.9 spg and 2.3 bpg while leading the Hurricanes to a 21-10 record and the Round of 16 of the 2022 FHSAA 3A state tournament. Montgomery was named second-team All-Broward County by the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel as a senior.

Montgomery is the second newcomer for Georgia's 2024-25 roster. Last fall, the Bulldogs signed Asa Newell, a 6-10, 215-pound power forward from Destin, Fla., who was ranked as the No. 8 overall prospect in the 247Sports.com composite ledger for Class of 2024 prep prospects.

The 2024-25 campaign will be the Bulldogs' third under head coach Mike White. During his first season, Georgia improved its regular-season win total by 10 victories, the second-largest increase of any Power conference program. Last season, the Bulldogs advanced to the semifinals of the NIT en route to their first 20-win season since 2016.
