No single track leaps out the way Summer Lawns' best ones do, but overall Hejira leaves the more lasting—if mysteriously vague—impression.

Happy New Year!
Resuming my regular listening habits, I wanted to dive in an artist's discography I hadn't given much attention to up to this year - Joni Mitchell's.
While I'd heard her masterpiece "Blue" before, I hadn't gone back to her music much, since I simply ended up never being in the mood for it.
Well, colour me surprised when I woke up this morning feeling like putting on some good ol' Joni!
I'd seen much talk online around her 1976 effort "Hejira," so I was ... read more
“ There's comfort in melancholy
When there's no need to explain
It's just as natural as the weather

Joni Mitchell’s 8th album Hejira is harder to tame than Blue but once you do, you don’t want to listen to anything else
In this record Joni’s raw writing is filled with emotional intelligence leading to deep and heart wrenching lyrics
Her voice is so genuine, so natural that she made me feel like I always knew her.

This might actually be my favourite Joni Mitchell album, I enjoyed the slower and more ambient sounds of these songs a lot. Still, her folk roots are very obvious and her lyrics are on a poetic high. Just a super well-rounded project and an awesome listen.
While I appreciate the incredible instrumentals of the album, as well as the intriguing concept behind it, the album fails to deliver well. The vocals on the album are decent at best, and sound like a crazy person doing karaoke (but actually just singing about random events) at worst. The storytelling is an upside to the album, but it really isn't enough to save the vocals. Maybe it's just not my cup of tea, but I can't call it anything better than mediocre.
