Editorial Reviews
Originally released in 1980 Rockabilly Blues is a collection of tunes harkening back to the days Johnny Cash enjoyed at Sun Records. The album showcases an all star cast of musicians, producers, and friends of the man in black. Featuring the singles Cold Lonesome Morning, Without Love written by his then son-in-law Nick Lowe, and The Twentieth Century Is Almost Over a tune that would help to spawn The Highwaymen, this LP is often referred to one of the great lost Cash albums.

The disc is thick and sturdy! Sound quality is excellent.
The songs made little impact when released as singles, but the songs I like best are The Twentieth Century is Almost Over (recorded prematurely as there was still 20 years to go at the time; Alabama covered the song much nearer the time) and One Way Rider (with June Carter), a Rodney Crowell song that Ricky Skaggs also recorded. Other great songs include The Last Time (the Kris Kristofferson song, not the Rolling Stones song) and Without Love.
Perhaps not an album for those who just want a little of his music, but a nice album for his fans.
Cash has challenged himself with several up-tempo songs and a band that can swing a bit wide of Nashville standard time. Still, Nick Lowe's "Without Love" sounds uncannily like a Johnny Cash song, and Billy Joe Shaver's "The Cowboy Who Started The Fight" provides exactly the sort of narrative on which Cash's voice finds authority.
Nothing here is as hauntingly effective as Cash's earliest sides with the Tennessee Two, but neither is this the sound of a great artist coasting. It may not be the right disc to begin one's appreciation of Johnny Cash, but it's a great place to view his on-going legacy.
