Metro is a mastery-based school, which means the end goal of instruction and assignments is to ensure students are able to demonstrate an understanding of content before moving on in the curriculum. Metro works from the premise that there is no select group of STEM students; every student has the capacity to engage in critical thinking and problem solving across the curriculum and regardless of their college/career goals.

I’m an 8th grader at Metro as of writing this, and boy, do I have a lot to say. 8th grade…god, it’s an experience. I’ll admit, I made some AMAZING friends here. But…my entire sleep schedule is *out the window* because of all the times I stayed up past midnight doing homework. Every morning I dread going to school because there’s always something due, some project or assignment that I need to get done. I’ll tell you from personal experience that burnout SUCKS. I used to want all my assignments to be perfect, but at this point, I just want to pass. Some teachers and admin—don’t get me wrong, most of them are great—don’t seem to understand how we, as students, feel, giving increasingly shorter deadlines for time-consuming work. Clubs are often cut for virtual days, work piles up fast, and you feel worthless when you’re not at mastery. Don’t even get me STARTED on the whole mastery system. I’d write more, but I’ve run out of space. Final verdict: don’t come here. Save your mental health.
The school concept and execution is pretty dang good, to be able to do college credit plus, while having it be deeply connected to the actual school itself is great. The problem is that the school itself is small, while also having very few facilities for normal schooling. No cafeteria, no kitchen, which results in terrible food, no in building gym. Building is cramped. There is a new building that should be opening soon so I hope that the next students of metro don't have the problems I did.
I think it's helpful that they prepare us for college readiness, however I think it is a little trickier to go from Metro to college rather than from another school due to our mastery system. Since we have a safety net for our grades due to being able to remediate assignments, it's hard for a lot of students to adjust to the college setting where you can't remediate things, especially since we have to have a 90% to get Mastery, so a lot of students have a hard time dealing with getting anything less, even though you don't have to have all 90s in college. Otherwise it's pretty good, I think the culture has room for improvement because the students sometimes feel like they're competing with others due to the college classes and advanced classes, but also that's normal for any high school. I haven't had the school lunch, but from what I've seen and heard it is not very satisfactory. I also believe we should have performing arts and/or music.
