[Spoilers] Sidequests and Progression Routes Guide

Note: This is NOT a walkthrough. The order I list Progression steps is not meant to be followed front to back for a balanced playthrough. It's meant to be used as an answer to any "How do I get to this place I want to go?" questions. You can go several equally viable directions all at once from the start of the game, and it is recommended to explore around instead of following a linear progression.

In this post I'm gonna try and lay out all of the mod's new quests and progression routes, to serve as a single resource for players looking for how to do something in particular. I will undoubtedly make mistakes or misjudge the conditions for some things based on my own anecdotal experience, so feel free to post any corrections or info that should be added in the comments.

If a progression route isn't listed, it is unchanged from vanilla, i.e. firelink to tomb of giants.

Progression: To New Londo

  1. In Firelink, talk to Petrus until he gives you the Lift Key.

  2. Take the lift down to New Londo.

  3. New Londo is extremely easy right now, there are very few enemies. Explore to your heart's content, and optionally kill Ingward for the Key to the Seal if you'd like to hop down to the Four Kings early. But beware - draining the water of New Londo has some rather dire side effects on the previously peaceful area.

Progression: To Undead Parish

  1. Get to Darkroot Basin one of two ways:

    1. From Undead Burg

      1. Head up the stairs from Firelink and proceed through Burg as normal. Make sure to grab the Burg Latchkey by rolling through the barrels in the very first part of the burg and exploring around, as you'll need it to access a bonfire and save Griggs.

      2. Defeat Taurus Demon, receive Watchtower Key.

      3. Hellkite keeps too close a watch on the bridge these days, so use that key to go down to where Havel usually is and open the door to Darkroot Basin.

    2. From New Londo

      1. Explore New Londo for the key to Valley of the Drakes.

      2. Run down the valley hugging the right wall and take the elevator up to Darkroot Basin.

  2. Go up the cliffside paths from the basin towards Andre.

  3. There is a new boss in the room just before Andre's usual room containing a Titanite Demon. Defeat it to proceed.

  4. Welcome to the Parish! Sen's Fortress is already open to explore, and Andre is just inside its main gates, so don't miss him.

  5. Gargoyles are missing right now, but you can fight them after you acquire a set of heavy armor (or at least just the gloves).

Progression: Darkroot Forest Sealed Door

  1. The crest of Artorias is no longer in the game. Instead, the door only opens to "compatriots of the abyss walker".

  2. Get any of the following items:

    1. Hawk Ring - Drops from the giant that normally opens the doors to Sens Fortress

    2. Hornet Ring - Just after pinwheel, nestled in a big sarcophagus next to the mimic bonfire.

    3. Leo Ring - Drops from Ornstein

    4. Silver Pendant - Drops from boss at Grave of Artorias

  3. Wear one of the rings or have the Silver Pendant in your inventory and interact with the door to open it.

Progression: To Blighttown

  1. Explore New Londo for the key to Valley of the Drakes.

  2. Enter Blighttown through Valley of the Drakes, and proceed as normal.

Progression: To Depths/Lower Burg

  1. Travel up backwards through Blighttown to reach the door connecting it to the Depths.

  2. Examine the door three times to get a key and open it.

  3. Gaping Dragon isn't here right now - explore the area and continue upwards to Lower Burg.

    1. If you'd like to fight it, find the Peculiar Doll behind the group of torch hollows in Lower Burg and come back.

  4. Capra's old boss room is a bonfire room now. Feel free to punch that fog wall.

Progression: Ringing the Bells

  1. In this mod, ringing the bells does not open Sens Fortress as it is already open. Instead, ringing the bells wakes up the sleeping Nito and activates his fight. If you go to Nito before ringing the bells, there is a special encounter where you can steal away his soul. This means the bells are not even necessary to beat the game.

  2. The gargoyles don't spawn when you first get there. To activate the fight, you need to possess heavy gloves like stone, giants, etc.

  3. To ring the bell after gargoyles, equip aforementioned heavy gloves.

  4. Quelaag's bell works as normal, take the New Londo to Valley of the Drakes path to get to Blighttown and ring the bell there.

  5. Nito's cutscene plays, and his actual fight is now active.

Progression: Lost Izalith and the Lava

  1. After killing Quelaag, proceed to kill Ceaseless and go through Demon Ruins as normal. Demon Firesage and Centipede are not in this area.

  2. Upon activating the shortcut lift back to Chaos Servant covenant, go and check the shortcut to Lost Izalith, it should be openable.

  3. Explore Lost Izalith as you please.

  4. To get in the lava and kill Centipede demon, chug a Sunlight Elixir (it gives super fire resistance) and run to where the illusory wall that usually has a bonfire behind it is located. A daughter of chaos sits wounded within, and casts a spell on you to allow you to fight in lava just fine, so you can kill Centipede and get the orange charred ring to explore the rest of the lava area.

Progression: To Anor Londo

  1. You can explore Sen's Fortress as soon as you reach it, but you cannot go to Anor Londo yet.

  2. There are two ways to get to Anor Londo:

    1. Get the Pale Eye Orb from Patches's first encounter or the pit he kicks you down, then return it to its resting place in a coffin in the Catacombs, to return the pale servants to their post and enter via Sen's Fortress.

    2. Go to Painting of Ariamis by exploring lower burg and depths until you get a painted doll, then fighting Gaping Dragon. Upon exiting the painting, you are in Anor Londo.

  3. Note that you can explore Duke's Archives immediately upon entering Anor Londo, as it it not blocked by sunlight fog.

Progression: Siege of Anor Londo

  1. After killing Ornstein and Smough, you may notice Gwynevere's Chamber is locked. To get the key, kill Gwyndolin.

    1. Darkmoon Seance Ring is located in drained New Londo.

  2. Upon opening Gwynevere's Chamber, the secret of Anor Londo is revealed, and the sun goes dark all over the world.

  3. Your warping ability is blocked until you complete this event.

    1. However, you can escape via the Velka Raven in Painting of Ariamis if you need to. Your warping ability is only blocked while in Anor Londo.

  4. Darkwraiths are sieging Anor Londo - help the silver knights kill them and make your way down to Gwyn's Tomb.

  5. In Gwyn's Tomb is a new boss. Defeat him to regain your ability to warp.

Progression: To DLC

  1. Pre-requisite: Kill Moonlight Butterfly to free Dusk.

  2. Normal path

    1. Get the Lordvessel by completing Anor Londo, then take the usual DLC entrance that appears in Darkroot Basin.

  3. Alternate path (locked after obtaining lordvessel!)

    1. Visit the Grave of Artorias and defeat the boss that awaits there for the Silver Pendant.

    2. Trade the Silver Pendant to Snuggly the Crow for the Broken Pendant.

    3. Take the usual DLC entrance in the basin.

    4. Optional: Revisit the Grave of Artorias after completing and leaving the DLC for a special fight.

    5. Revisit the DLC later to explore the rest of it, working backwards.

    6. In the pool area where you normally fight Sanctuary Guardian is a new boss, unlocked by some condition - either killing a number of NPCs, or having done step 4. Not sure yet.

Quest: Capricious Thrall and the Chthonic Spark

  1. Capricious Thrall is what Capra Demon transforms into upon being killed in Lower Burg.

  2. Capricious Thrall either kills you and vanishes (no rematch), or you "kill" it and it vanishes anyway.

  3. There is another (optional!) encounter when you fight Iron Golem where the Thrall suddenly spawns and makes it a 2v1 fight.

  4. When in Anor Londo, on the rooftop with three exits to stairs, it will spawn again, but this time you can truly kill it and are rewarded with the Chthonic Spark which gives you the ability to warp anywhere. However, this fight has a time limit, and if you do not kill it in time it vanishes once more.

  5. If not killed in Anor Londo, the Thrall makes a final appearance in Duke's Archives, so you can get the Spark there if you missed it.

Quest: Xanthous King Jeremiah

  1. After obtaining the Chthonic Spark, Jeremiah can spawn in one of a few locations: Izalith poison swamp, Bed of Chaos room, or Vamos's room in Catacombs if you give Vamos the spark (not recommended, rest of this quest assumes he kills you in Izalith).

  2. If he kills you, he steals your Chthonic Spark and your ability to warp. You have no choice but to "chase" him out of Lost Izalith.

    1. If you kill him, his questline ends immediately and you get his drops.

  3. Take the shortcut back to near Firesage's room, and go to the elevator up to Chaos Servants. Jeremiah takes it up before you can get on it.

  4. When you take the elevator, if you saved the new daughter of chaos npc and she resides outside the covenant room, Jeremiah's items will be in front of her and his questline ends. Otherwise, Eingyi and Quelana's Sister will be dead, and Jeremiah moves on.

  5. Proceed out of the Nursery into Blighttown. If Quelana lives (even if invisible), Jeremiah's loot will be in front of her.

  6. Other progression routes unknown so far.

Quest: Havel the Rock

  1. Before going to Duke's Archives, either find Priscilla's Dagger at the bottom of Sen's or kill Priscilla for her Soul. (must have dagger if doing velka pact).

  2. Upon dying to Seath, he sees the remnant of the crossbreed and flees in guilt, abandoning his soul fragment.

  3. Havel is locked away in the prison tower of the Duke's Archives.

  4. Fetch the key to his cell on one of the gears in the center of the room.

  5. Free him, and let him walk to the ladder.

  6. When he's standing at the ladder, open the door at the top, and he'll climb up and teleport out.

  7. In Seath's boss arena, you will find his soul fragment and no fight.

  8. Head down to Ash Lake, where you may see Havel and Seath near the Everlasting Dragon. Reload the area until they are both gone and Havel's drops litter the ground.

Quest: Gravedaughter Ciaran

  1. Optional step: Go to Tomb of the Giants before ringing the Bells of Awakening for a special encounter with Ciaran in Nito's room.

  2. Complete the alt path dlc encounter by defeating Manus.

  3. Return to Artorias's Grave and win the fight there.

  4. Return to the DLC again and work backwards until you reach Oolacile Sanctuary, where Ciaran will be. Give her the soul of Artorias.

  5. Ciaran will no longer fight you in Nito's boss fight.

Quest: The Pale Eye Orb and the Four Statues

  1. Fetch the Pale Eye Orb either as a reward from Patches in the Catacombs or in the pit he kicks you down in Tomb of the Giants. Do not return it to its place in Catacombs.

  2. There are several events that cause the Pale Eye Orb to quiver:

    1. Getting cursed.

    2. Killing a butterfly in the Crystal Caves.

    3. Exploring Ash Lake (hydra might need to be alive).

    4. Using the Soul of Manus.

  3. These events will cause you to be able to obtain rings at the following statues (each event unlocks one ring, in corresponding order):

    1. Lithic Bond - Undead Parish - where firekeeper soul usually is below gargoyles.

    2. Empyrean Bond - Undead Parish - behind Hellkite.

    3. Serous Bond - Firelink Shrine - behind Frampt.

    4. Bond to Beyond - Painted World - in the middle of Phalanx dudes.

Quest: Black Phantom Rematches

  1. Complete Anor Londo event.

  2. The following bosses now have black phantom rematches and give additional new drops:

    1. Taurus Demon

    2. Gargoyles

    3. Moonlight Butterfly

    4. Quelaag

    5. Titanite Demon

    6. Ornstein and Smough

Quest: Ashen Ring

  1. To get the Ashen Ring, complete the Anor Londo siege event.

  2. With the Ashen Ring in your possession, black knight phantoms can be seen in some locations around the world, observing scenery:

    1. Undead Asylum, where you normally get your catalyst/bow/etc.

    2. Darkroot Forest, in the Forest Hunter area. To the right of Alvina's place, hug the edge until you find him.

    3. Sen's Fortress, behind the illusory wall up the ladder where the giant is.

    4. Undead Burg, on top of the near tower in Taurus Demon arena.

  3. With all black knights defeated, when you kill Gwyn, the ring transforms into Gwynevere's Ring. It grants various buffs and helps with the Velka Pact quest.

Quest: Velka Pact

You can do the rest of the game in any order before, during, or after the following steps, as long as you do the steps strictly in order, i.e you must save the sinners until after making the pact for it to count. Also note the questline requires doing alt path DLC, so don't forget to do that before Anor Londo to avoid locking yourself out of it.0. It is recommended to do the Ashen Ring quest before or alongside this one, as it helps with the fight at the end.

  1. Enter the Painted World, and just after the bridge you spawn on, explore to the right in the cliffy area for a raven.

  2. The raven takes you back to Firelink and prompts you to make a pact with Velka. Accept.

  3. The following events break the pact: Killing the Gravedaughter, killing Priscilla, anything that counts as a sin.

  4. Kill Sinners to appease Velka: (any order)

    1. Complete Ciaran's quest, then punish Gravelord Nito for his sins by killing him.

    2. Complete Havel's quest and get his drops to punish Seath for his sins.

    3. Punish Jeremiah for his sins by killing him when he attacks.

  5. Unsure if dying to him breaks the pact or if you can still get it by picking up his drops.4. Punish Gwyn for his sins by killing him.

  6. After killing Gwyn, walk out of the kiln and back up the stairs, where the Velka raven is waiting. If you've done everything correctly, there is a prompt to travel to the past to fight Gwyn, Lord of Sunlight.

  7. If you did the Ashen Ring quest, wear Gwynevere's ring to gain assistance from black knight phantoms during the fight.

Awesome thanks!

u/OFurthestBenO avatar

Mind if we happen to use this for the wiki? Was planning to write most of this up, but your formating is pretty amazing and is quite hard to trump tbh.

u/Kartelant avatar

Go right ahead, if you just c&p the whole thing it wouldn't hurt to add this post as a reference though!

u/OFurthestBenO avatar

Thanks. Yeah, we'll link the post as a reference.

We are planning to split it up into different pages to make it more organised, so we'll mention it at the bottom of the category page of the walkthrough.

Note on your Capricious Thrall quest, he will despawn in Anor Londo if you don't kill him quickly enough (happened to me), and can be found again in Seath's prison tower (relayed info from u/ULiopleurodon)

u/luiginut avatar

Yep, and if Havel is still there he does a LOT of damage. I loved that encounter. I dragged Capra all the way up to the ladder where havel was waiting. He kills Capra in about 5 hits.

u/GilleahTheHexer avatar

Thanks for this. I fought him in Anor Londo having died to him in both previous encounters and he teleported away, so after reading the post I was worried that I’d lost my chance to get the Spark.

u/Kartelant avatar

Thanks, added.

I thought we'd lost the ability to roll through crates/barrels etc. and we had to smash them now with a weapon... is that not the case? Do I have a bug? :(

Also - just last night I made it all the way up from blight town to the Capra Demon door and walked past it - because who wants to fight that mess of a boss without finding the bonfire - only to get ganked by thiefs... and now I read that the fog door *is* the bonfire?! :)) well played..

Have avoided reading further down, don't want any more spoilers :D

Good job by the way, the mod is amazing.

[deleted]
[deleted]

The roll thing was an earlier build but it's been fixed in newer patches.

That's awesome! But I thought I was already on the latest... I'll double check when I get home.

If I am, I'll have to go the full uninstall/re-install route, I guess.

Thanks :)

Just a heads up for those of you that can't beat the new boss from the Siege on Anor Londo, I went to the painted world then took the crow back to Firelink Shrine and was then able to use warp.

u/Kartelant avatar

That's a useful backdoor, as that boss is extremely rough on some builds. Added it as a note, thanks!

[deleted]
[deleted]

What do you mean by 'take the crow back to Firelink'? I've completely explored the painted world and done 10+ vanilla playthroughs and I have no idea what this means.. Maybe I'm forgetting something. I've killed the new boss but O&S on steroids are a bit much right now and I can't seem to warp.

[deleted]
[deleted]

When you first enter the painted world and before you get to the bonfire there is a spot on the right side of the path that you can go through and find the big crow.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Thanks I'll check that out.

With pyromancies I defeated that boss, a melee fight is just suicide for me, but I don’t kniw how to ascend the pyro hand, I’m concerned about it and the Xanthous guy just killed Quelaag's syster and his egged servant

When/how do you fight the gargoyles ?

u/Kartelant avatar

Knew I was missing something! I'll add a section on the bells.

The current understanding is Gargoyles activate when you have heavy gloves (weird condition but you'll see why). Many sets count as heavy, just keep going through different areas til you get something like the stone set.

u/blueglove92 avatar

Thanks! My other question is how to you get to Artorias's grave? I still get the compatriots of Abysswalker message.

u/Kartelant avatar

The side path through the Basin past the hydra is always open. That particular door opens if you're wearing Hawk, Hornet, or Leo ring, or apparently if you possess the Silver Pendant.

Outstanding work! 👏👏

u/Coolkid222 avatar

Maybe someone can help me out with Havel's quest. I freed him, ive never seen seeth other than in ashlake as a super white bright version. After freeing him and reloading once he was at the top of the ladder i teleported to ash lake and the everlasting dragon was gone and havel sits right in the middle below where the everlasting dragon was. Seeth is still just sitting in the water and he dies in one firebomb but always comes back. Do i just never get to fight seeth again? I ran back to both boss rooms multiple times and seeth never spawns.

u/Mortuss avatar

does killing Lautrec count as a sin for the Velka pact?

u/OFurthestBenO avatar

If anything like the other game; then if not by the black eye orb then killing him will count as a sin.

So kill him with the black eye orb route to not get sinned by it.

[deleted]
[deleted]

I killed him the sinful way, then made the pact with Velka after that, so it technically hasn't been broken by it. Think I'll still find myself SOL when it comes down to it?

u/Kartelant avatar

Details on the pact are still a little scarce as the community figures things out. Your experience could help us clarify the requirements though!

Notes on the velka pact:

  • You can make the pact before doing the alternate DLC

  • Ashen Ring is not required, you can trigger Lord of Sunlight without it (you just won't get help)

u/Kartelant avatar

I should clarify this, but the reason I say to do DLC before pact is because if you do pact first and complete Anor Londo, getting the lordvessel locks off the alt path DLC. So you'd have to warp out of Anor Londo before completing it to do it that way.

Thanks for the info about ashen ring!

u/ULiopleurodon avatar

Ah yeah you're right, but making the pact takes you back to firelink anyways, so unless you go back to the painted world and keep progressing it wouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the guide, it's a great resource!

u/Kartelant avatar
Edited

You're absolutely correct about that actually! I'll edit to correct that.

Thanks for contributing, I'm glad it's helpful ^^

I'd like to go to Artorias's grave, but I can't figure out how to crack the seal. Do I have to go the long way around every time?

u/Kartelant avatar

The seal opens to the rings of any of the other three Knights of Gwyn: Hornet, Hawk, and Leo. I'll add a note about this since it seems to be a common issue.

u/Ethel121 avatar

I am having trouble getting the Havel quest to work (specifically, trying to do it as part of the Velka pact). Every time I do it, Havel just goes straight to Ash Lake and kills the everlasting dragon. I think it's due to Seath immediately transporting to his boss room after killing me in the tower (he vanishes and the chest appears midway through the player death animation). Is there a pre-requisite I might be missing (pale eye orb or something? Need to visit Ash Lake beforehand maybe?)

u/Kartelant avatar

I am actually not sure at all. I feel the least certain about that part of the Velka pact, and we've had hugely conflicting reports of Havel's effect on Seath - some players that free him report Seath dead but no drops, some report Seath alive, some get it completed correctly. What I've written is more or less an estimation of the requirements, but it seems they need more clarification. Did you try reloading the area at each step?

u/Ethel121 avatar

Yes. On reflection I do think it is tied to Seath changing position instantly (I can remember getting Seath's soul drop on one of my previous playthroughs, and I think that time was when he stayed in the tower). For further confusion, on that playthrough I did open Havel's cell, but then killed him. Could it be possibly related to Gwyndolin/dark anor londo maybe?

u/Kartelant avatar

No idea. Definitely gonna need more testing to clarify what exactly the triggers for that questline are...

u/Ethel121 avatar

So, another poster figured out the Havel/Seath deal (thankfully). They are actually totally unrelated. If you enter Seath's boss fight (in the tower) and die with the crossbreed dagger (or Priscilla's soul I believe), then Seath will go to Ash Lake and leave his lord soul in the crystal caves.

Found Xanthous drops in blighttown by a pillar exiting boss chamber .

Anybody knows any details in regards to the Siegward questline? I just saw him once so far sitting in front of the Depths entrance saying it was locked. Even after I opened it his dialogue did not change. After reloading the area he was gone and can't seem to find him now.

u/Kartelant avatar

Seems normal - His next appearance should be at Sens, unless you've already moved the boulders there, in which case he may be in Anor Londo now. I didn't actually know he appeared in front of the Depths, but his questline seems to progress anyway and doesn't seem to really be missable

I just did Sens and did not see him at his usual spot. Does the mod put him somewhere else now?

u/luiginut avatar

Yes, he is no longer by the snake men by the first boulder ramp. He is now on the wooden platform above the second bolder ramp. The one you have to drop down onto, on the way towards the boulder pit with a ladder.

Hmm ok strange I did all of Sens but did not see him. Maybe I progressed too far already into the story and he is in Anor Londo already.

While this mod is cool it kinda fucks up a lot of the NPCs it seems? For example I never encountered Patches either while I fully cleared Catacombs and Tomb.

more reply More replies

Any idea where Siegmeyer is after Anor Londo?

I already was at Lost Izalith and he was not there.

In the meanwhile I did see his daughter and talked to her, she left Firelink now. Went to Ash Lake but no one to be seen there...

Is the etched ring required for doing the Velka pact quest? because the ring crumbles literally in the light everywhere there is light.

u/Kartelant avatar

The etched ring is exclusively for challenge run modes and is not used in any questlines or any progression that we know of.

Question about the Velka pact: I just arrived in the DLC painted world(got teleported here during bossfight in depths) but I can't seem to make a pact? I can only select Fly back to Firelink?

u/Kartelant avatar

If you've already killed any of the other bosses required for the pact, you can't enter it. Also that's not the DLC, painting is base game lol

Ok I could enter it but only after taking the bird back to Firelink. There I could make the pact

u/Kartelant avatar

Ah, understood. I'll add this as a clarification, thanks.

Awesome work! thank you so much! would you mind including this to the wiki? https://dark-souls-1-daughters-of-ash.fandom.com/wiki/Walkthrough

u/JuryRigging avatar

How would one be able to leave Anor Londo if they entered via Painting? There was no teleport back to Sen's at the beginning area. Do I have to kill O&S? That's a pretty problematic situation for me because I don't have much in the way of equipment (no upgrades on flasks, only +5 on weapons) and I'd like to GTFO of Anor Londo before fighting Fatboy and Slim.

u/Kartelant avatar

There is a way out via the painting. Enter, and explore the area immediately after the bridge before reaching the area proper, off to the right there is a way to return.

u/JuryRigging avatar

Holy crap, I would have never found that in a million years. Thank you so much!

Concerning Lost Izalith, I killed Ceaseless and then progressed as usual. Since Firesage and Centipede were not there I went back and took the path where the old Sunlight Maggot used to be. The door opened for me, saying something like there is strong fire within? Don't know what I did to trigger this door or if it's intended to open always. Anyway I then approached Lost Izalith from the backside. I could see the Centipede sitting in the big open lava area where normally all the halfdragons would be. I chugged a Sunlight Elixir to cross the lava to check for the daughter of chaos in the previously hidden bonfire spot but there was no one there? Did I miss something? Additionally the boss fight triggered. Luckily I could lure him onto the safe area and once halfway through the fight the ring dropped already.

u/Kartelant avatar

Not sure, this is the first I've heard of that npc not appearing. Sounds like there's an unknown condition to be met first.

Well I did not activate the elevator before going to Centipede. Maybe if you skip that then she won't appear?

u/Kartelant avatar

That may be the case. I thought that elevator was needed for the heat message to open the shortcut, but it appears that's also some unknown condition!

After thinking about it maybe the "heat/fire" message to open the shortcut is that you need to possess the Chtonic Spark? Since I read somewhere that Jeremiah opens it for you if he steals it the first time?

u/SomeChefDude avatar

I'm actually stuck in Lost Izalith at the moment because the door won't open for me. It says "Bring the old flame" I'm guessing it's tied to having a certain pyro spell? I have no idea and I'm running out of things to do.

quick question regarding the velka pact if anyone is still looking. If I do the alt dlc path that makes it so ciaran is not in the nito fight, do I need to steal nito's soul or do I need to kill him?

u/Kartelant avatar

Currently stealing his soul does not lock his fight away, so you can steal it or not and it'll make no difference for velka pact.

u/ocorena avatar

So I don't need to kill him ever? Does just stealing his soul count as punishing him?

u/Kartelant avatar

I don't think we've had anyone steal his soul after making the Velka pact, so I have no idea.

u/ocorena avatar

ok, I guess I'll just kill him this time, as the new final boss is my whole goal of this run

What's the best way to handle the prowling demon boss? It's easy enough, but very tedious and the area you fight it in is just a massive pain. Averaging 35 a hit with my club, which isn't much of a dent.

Should I be exploring somewhere else before going towards Parish?

Treat the mod like dark souls - if you're up against a wall, either bash your head through it or look elsewhere for means of strengthening your build. You're not necessarily meant to fight prowling demon first, he just happens to be part of the changed progression towards the Parish. Check darkroot, blighttown, new londo, or catacombs if you're stuck there.

There ain't a quick way back to Catacombs so that's out, and New Londo is locked up.

I don't have the free time to waste time trying to "discover" the right path anymore. I just want to know where to go and when.

Then you are looking for a walkthrough to tell you where to go, which unfortunately is not what this post is, though I think someone is currently writing one on the wiki.

As to New Londo being locked up, that is exactly the kind of thing I wrote this post for - take a look at the first Progression section, you can get the key right now, as well as the key to Valley and Blighttown, leading to a shortcut to where you are right now.

Where do you go to upgrade your weapons? Is it still Andre? If so, I guess I have to slog through a boss with too much HP to get to the point where the game isn't a pain in the ass.

Where is Gwyndolin located?

u/Kartelant avatar

Default location, at the entrance to Gwyn's tomb.

So you still need the ring for it to open the hidden path?

u/Kartelant avatar

Yup. Find it in New Londo

Small questions:

-Where is the key to open the locked doors in Painted World? It used to be in the basement, after falling down the well but I couldn't find it...

-How do you get to the bonfire on top of that crypt in Tomb of Giants?

u/blagkh avatar
  • There's a key in the basement area, explore until you find some stairs (or maybe a ladder?) going up, and the key is there.

  • Jump from above

  • I searched all over the basement area, and there is indeed a ladder out of the basement which leads to the locked door but there is no key there...

  • I tried jumping from right near that ledge but can't access the platform and if you jump from the starting area it is too high and you die. From where exactly do you need to jump?

u/blagkh avatar

Did you pop all the illusory walls? I'm pretty sure there's a small room with the key somewhere up there.

Keep going down the standard route, after entering the tomb, and there'll be a lower point that is safe to jump from.

Quick Question to alt DLC path. [Obvious Spoilers] So I entered the alt DLC as described in the guide above, which basically is one fight against Manus with help of Artorias and then you get kicked to New Londo Ruins, right? I revisited the Grave of Artorias and won the fight there. So now it says re-enter the DLC, but how? There is no portal anymore, or do i have to do it the regular way now by Lordvessel? I failed Velkas Pact in two runs now and really want to get things right this time.

u/Kartelant avatar

You can re-enter the dlc after getting Lordvessel or Chthonic Spark. You'll explore it backwards that way, and Ciaran will be in the Oolacile Sanctuary

Can I start the Velka pact AFTER killing Priscilla?

u/Salivation_Army avatar

Is there any chance you could do a simple "recommended order" for the quests? I've been doing a blind playthrough for the most part, but in trying to figure out a few particular things I just found out I've already locked myself out of the Velka quest (didn't have the dagger before I went to Seath). It feels a lot like I've wasted a big chunk of my semi-limited gaming time.

I did check the wiki but I find it fairly incomprehensible at the moment.

u/Kartelant avatar

The Velka quest was an extremely hidden piece of content that took the community several days and hints from the mod creator to crack, it's really not an intended piece of content for a first playthrough. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

A recommended order doesn't cover the finer points like nabbing the dagger, and honestly depends a lot on the class chosen too - I think waiting for the wiki walkthrough to be finished is ultimately the best course.

The Pale Eye Orb didn't quiver at Ash Lake. I had already killed the Hydra earlier.

Thanks for all of this. Very helpful. Regarding Ciaran; I finished the new fight in the Sif arena and got all the drops. Went back to Elizabeth and found only a lighted gravestone, but no Ciaran. I'm thinking now I needed to kill Manus in the Abyss first. Is that right?

The more I read, the more I'm getting the impression that a lot of the new stuff gets eliminated after you get the Lord Vessel. Is that a fair statement? Seems like you need to do some areas twice, once before and again after getting Lord Vessel.
