Like most New York City private schools, moral allowances are given for the full tuition paying families and their spawn. School culture especially in the middle and high school can be toxic with a white boys/girls club as the de facto "cool kids" and students on financial aid and from the outer boroughs left behind. Snarky, entitled, arrogant, and elitist behavior can be the norm. Teachers put up with a enormous amount of stress due to this. By fall of senior year, the alcohol flows very freely. But hey, compared to the public and charter options, your kid can get a great education. Too bad you have to sell your soul in the process.
Teachers are great and if you are motivated you will thrive academically. Unfortunately, most kids do not do their work, and rules are not reinforced whatsoever. There are no consequences here which leads to an awful bullying problem that the administration mostly ignores. Teachers I knew left because of the poorly behaved students. The school needs to gain more structure.
My children have received an exquisite education. The teachers and students are brilliant. Of course, no place is perfect, and the school has some areas of growth. I am grateful that my kids have gotten to attend such a special and magical school that has fostered their creativity, individuality, and intellectualism.
