David Bellisario Obituary

1957 - 2020 "Did I ever tell you about that?"You probably would have heard David Bellisario ask you at some point over dinner, while looking at motorcycles, or between takes on a film set. David was a loving husband and father, an explorer, and an avid storyteller. He was born on July 18, 1957 at a six-bed medical center in Mojave, California serving the Marine Corps Auxiliary Air Station there, and spent his childhood in Pennsylvania and Texas. Once finished with Cub Scouts, dinosaurs, fairy tales, and pirate adventure stories he developed into an avid reader, and reveled in science fiction/fantasy literature and history. Eventually, he came to love motorcycles, too. During David's early twenties, not sure what path to take in life, he decided to pack all he could onto a motorcycle and leave Dallas to begin a tour of the United States. This experience would bring him boundless adventures, Including couch surfing with a motley crew while they rebuilt a cabin at a commune outside Seattle, explaining why he had a broadsword on the handlebars of his 400cc bike to an ill-humored sheriff in Montana, and participating in a medievalist (Society for Creative Anachronism) war in the Appalachians. His stories about this time are legendary! Not long after that road trip, David moved to Los Angeles where his father was getting into the television industry. It was then that he decided to take a job that would send him into his lifelong film career. David understood that working for his father meant working twice as hard; he was committed to proving to himself and others that he was deserving of the position. Starting as a Production Assistant, he knuckled down and quickly rose to Associate Producer on Magnum P.I. Through 4 studios and 7 series – more than 600 episodes in all – he steadily gained more responsibility and became a full Producer on Quantum Leap, JAG, NCIS, and NCIS LA. Loved and respected by his peers for his creative mind, killer work ethic, humor, and humility, he counted himself lucky indeed to have worked almost 40 years with such a group of talented and creative people. It was during this time that David went to an industry party and fell madly in love with a smart and lively redhead from New York named Alberta Benson. Alberta was smitten, too. They were married in January of 1985 and had two happy, healthy boys, Anthony and Peter. In 1990 David and his family moved from Hollywood to Northridge. They were well settled in, very near what turned out to be the epicenter, when the 1994 Northridge earthquake struck. After making sure his family was safe, David spent the rest of that fateful day with a toolbox in hand, helping his neighbors secure their homes. He possessed a prodigious variety of skills, and was ever ready to help others - with his deft hands, friendly smile, great stories, and (occasionally) a pizzelle, he was a welcome sight indeed. Though he was dedicated to his work and his family, David took every opportunity to travel and see the world. He was always curious about other places and cultures, so whenever the time allowed he could be found exploring some interesting city or ruin, always learning and bringing back more stories to share. And he took as much of his family on these trips as he could. If he wasn't out and about, David was usually working on his bikes, building pergolas, tending his garden, hiking nearby trails, or just spending time at home with his loving wife and sons.In March of 2019, David was diagnosed with brain cancer. Despite his valiant struggle against the disease and having two brain surgeries he passed away on July 24, 2020, at the age of 63, in the comfort of his home and surrounded by loved ones. Smart, playful, loving, and kind, he made the world a better place in all his endeavors, just by being the man he was, every day of his life.David is survived by his wife, Alberta; his sons Anthony and Peter; his parents Donald Bellisario (Vivienne) and Margaret Bellisario; his sisters Joy Jenkins (Keeter), Leslie Ingham (Jim), Julie Watson (Alex), and Troian Bellisario (Patrick Adams; his brothers Michael and Nicolas; step-brothers Sean and Chad Murray; his uncle Lee Bellisario (Afarin); and quite a few nephews, nieces, and cousins. COVID-19 prevents our gathering for a funeral at this time; a memorial service will be held at an as-yet-undecided future date. I enjoyed all of the shows he had a part in producing from Magnum PI to NCIS Los Angeles. My heart goes out to the family. Our 34 year old son had a glioblastoma. He passed within 2 years. It's a devestating disease and we're praying a cure will be found.

So sad to learn of this. David was many things: creative, funny, curious, smart, and always loyal. If he counted you among his friends, he would always be there for you. I met David in Texas at an SCA event when I was 18. We became good friends for a brief pocket of time as he searched for what he wanted to do with his life, and he wrote me wonderful diatribes during his motorcycle trek across the USA. Once he hit LA and began work on Magnum PI, he told me his goal was to have his name be visible in the end credits, rather than a brief listing right after the dog-faced-boy. In a couple of seasons, it was.
Success never went to his head. While visiting Dallas one time, he showed up a bit early to pick me up and I was mowing the yard when he arrived. He took over the job, saying it felt good to do "an honest days work" physically. He'd been sporting his Magnum PI jacket and took it off, joking that he loved wearing it around LA because from behind, people often mistook him for Tom Selleck.
David and Alberta made a great couple, and gave their sons a lively, enriched upbringing. I met the boys once as kids when I had a layover in LA for four hours on my way to Australia, and David, Alberta, Tony and Peter all came to the airport and treated me to lunch. Now that's dedication-- going to LAX when you don't have to!
When I got together with my husband, before we became parents, we took an annual trek to LA, and always the Bellisarios had us over for lunch or dinner while we were in town. My husband had also worked with his family's business, so he and David compared notes on experiences working with Dad, and also talked about working on classic cars. The Bellisarios also really liked Raji, the friend we stayed with while in LA, and always included her in their invitations for us to visit.
A few years ago, I needed help getting out of a contract with a Hollywood play publisher and I asked David if he knew any good lawyers he could refer me to. He didn't offhand, but he went to his set and asked the cast and crew, and came back to me in a very short time with three names. I used one of his referrals and successfully got out of that mess. When it looked like I may have to go to LA to accomplish this, David said I was welcome to stay with them as long as necessary and could be the first to break in the new futon.
The last time I actually saw David was two years ago, when I met another friend in LA for a weekend. I called David and Alberta to see if a get- together was possible, and they took both me and my friend to Huntington Gardens for the day, including buying our lunches. We had a lovely visit, and they said they enjoyed introducing new people to Huntington.
David told me of his tumor last year, but very much downplayed it. At the time he was feeling better. When he sent me a pic of the golf-ball-sized growth he'd had removed, I teased him that there were better places to store his golf balls, and he said he'd been trying that trick that dogs do, catching the ball in his mouth, and ... well...
A lovely soul is no longer earthbound, and he will be sorely missed.

I went to high school with Scott Bakula in Kirkwood, Missouri. Scott has always thought the world of David and Donald. For me the work of all 3 speaks for itself. I'm a great fan of Quantum Leap as well as NCIS New Orleans. David helped spread Joy to many viewers like myself.
My brother, Dan, died of a glioblastoma brain tumor at age 55. So I understand the heartache your family has gone through. Please accept my sympathy for David's passing.

Matt and I still remember the family dinner in Alberta’s Hollywood apartment. Alberta had an eclectic assortment of fine and vintage china, flatware, and glasswear. David stood for awhile and studied the tableware, and started sorting, rearranging and repositioning everything. And just like that, the table setting was gorgeous, a treat to behold. Colors and patterns and shapes complimented and enhanced each other. David’s creative and artistic talent was awesome and he will be missed!

RIP David. I ( Bonnie Basaric) remember times with you at the wrap- parties. My husband ( Larry Potoker) worked with you for decades under your wing from JAG to NCIS. We all admired you. A wonderful man. God seems to take the best early. A silent power-house with so much creativity. Condolences to the family who loved him so much. We are speechless. Larry is crushed. Larry shared the same ethnic background as you and bonded with you on so many levels and learned so much from you- the history buff. Larry re-read your book you gave him 15 years ago upon hearing of your passing last week. 2020 has been so tough. We love you and pray for the healing of your family.
