I've read all of the series and lived in Australia when I started reading them. What a treat it was to read about the real story of how Australia was birthed whilst living in the actual places depicted in the books.
From Toongabby, to the Hawkesbury valley, from the Blue mountains to Parramatta, Windsor and Richmond my daily life was immersed in the actual places where much of the events took place. One of the best historical series I have ever read. If you ever plan to visit Australia, you couldn't do better than to read the series before you land in that sunburnt country.
If you go to Australia and don't read this series, you won't regret it but once, and that will be the rest of your life!

Book came quickly. Definitely used but I was alerted to that fact in description. Indeed the spine was not holding up well, but some scotch tape easily fixed the problem. Just a used paperback, but I enjoyed the story

I read about 8 of these books when I was in my late teens/early 20s. I absolutely loved them then and I have started to read them again now. I am an Australian and I love to read about what life was like for the convicts etc that founded our country. I especially like the fact that Jenny's story starts in England and goes through the whole story of how she was arrested and sent out to Austalia in the First Fleet. Jenny is a great character who is couragous and persistent in very difficult times.

It is so interesting to know where people come from and the nature of their attitudes and character. This book was so helpful in giving insight into the people who were brought, unwillingly, so far to subsist in the new, previously unchartered land of Australia. The circumstances certainly tested their courage which was the deciding factor in their survival, as the human bodies and minds were abused in every way. The book was terrific.

This book is the first in a series of twelve books on the history of Australia, it is well researched and well written. I have all twelve books but they are the worst for wear and I would like to pass them on to my grandchildren.
One day I think this series will be made into a TV mini series as it really gives an in depth view of conditions in the early days.

England threw away thousands of lower class citizens
because they could. Sad story with riveting details of people who
survived using courage they never knew they had. I read the first
in the series. That was enough.

This is the first in the Australia series, and I am interested in reading the rest of the books in the series. The author does a good job describing the heartwrenching and many times unjust conditions under which the convicts were brought to Botany Bay, and also brings to life the obstacles that were present in the lives of poorer English citizens of the time. Characters are well-drawn and interesting. Recommended!

I started reading this series years ago and never finished it, it's taken me a while to find it and I'm extremely happy that I did so I can finish. Even though it's historical fiction it has a lot of factual information. It's a very good series.

Great book if you are interested in the transportation to australia and how the country developed in those early difficult days. Shame that the cover is so naff as it doesn't really reflect the depth of history and the struggle the first settlers had to endure just to survive
