Notes
Album by the Clifford Brown and Max Roach Quintet, described by The New York Times as "perhaps the definitive bop group until Mr. Brown's fatal automobile accident in 1956". The album was critically well-received and includes several notable tracks, including two that have since become jazz standards. The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. It is included in Jazz: A Critic's Guide to the 100 Most Important Recordings at #34, where it is described by New York Times jazz critic Ben Ratliff as "one of the strongest studio albums up to that time".
The majority of the sessions that comprise this album were recorded at Capitol Studios in Hollywood in August 1954. Two of the tracks were recorded in February 1955 at Capitol Studios in New York City.
Originally released on the EmArcy label, it has been multiply re-issued, including in a 2000 edition by Verve Records that contains additional tracks. Also, all tracks are included in the 2011 release, 'The Complete Mercury Sessions'.

Very good sounding version , but everything goes better if you change the polarity.- Sounds amazing. Great separation and soundstage. Very quite pressing. The best I’ve ever heard this album.

B side had a visible scratch out of the package. Fairly significant popping on Joy Spring. Otherwise the record is quiet and sounds fine considering the digital source.referencing Jordu (LP, Album, Reissue, Mono) TLP-5540
No problems with this press; near silent and recording is fresh and vibrant.- Don’t really see any difference w/the photos on back compared to the linked version in the notes. Just a slight variance in the contrast of the digital photos that were taken for the upload. Labels and matrices also an exact match. Seems like it’s the same version.

Waxtime along with DOL, Jazz Wax Records and many others get a bad rep for being semi bootlegging labels simply cutting from MP3s or CD rips. While its true their practices are abit shady they arent committing any crimes per se and it allows them to sell records at the price records should be ie about 12 to 15 quid. After putting off for sometime from all the hate i did start buying some Waxtime LPs due to not wanting to pay huge amounts for OGs or other reissues. This is my 20th Waxtime and its 20 for 20 now in terms of being wonderfully pressed (by GZ media no less 🤯) and sounding far better than i was led to expect. While its obvious they are cut from digital the sources arent bad for my 20 odd LPs and this one is the same. At £14 for a flat quiet press with good sound and a solid if basic jacket with a good poly lined inner there can be no complaints and its nice to be reminded im not an idiotic vinyl snob who cant enjoy music unless its all ANALogue!- Nice edition of a very good record. One of the best jazz albums, and one of the earliest that feels like an album as much as a session.
- I wish Acoustic Sounds would remaster this one too. The OG EmArcy pressings are a little less than great sounding. Amazing album though.
- Fantastic early Brown & Roach of the great partnership that sadly ended so soon. Harold Land also brings some excellent solo work.
Very solid mono recording/pressing. This '74 pressing hales from the time when Japan used pristine vinyl when other (US) plants were using noisy recycled vinyl. Thus a clean copy of this pressing is dead silent and a joy to listen to. - Edited 2 years ago

Huge pop on side 2 for half of song one. First side flawless with great sound. Side 2 flawless otherwise, but that 2 minute pop is disappointing.
