UPDATED with new trailer: Ahead of its world premiere Saturday out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Kevin Costner’s Western epic Horizon: An American Saga has dropped.

The Warner Bros and New Line Cinema film, the first in a four-part series, hits theaters June 28, with the second pic to follow August 16. The third installment is starts production later this month.

Costner directed and co-wrote the film with Jon Baird. Itexplores the lure of the Old West and how it was won — and lost — through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861-1865, it takes audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes.

The massive cast is led by Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Owen Crow Shoe, Tatanka Means, Ella Hunt, Tim Guinee and Danny Huston.

In a wide-ranging interview for Deadline’s Disruptors + Cannes Film Festival magazine, Costner said of the Horizon saga, which continues his love of Westerns: “I feel I’ve made a movie for the people, period. This isn’t a movie from me. I felt like it was my turn in my career to tell a story. This is the one I choose to tell. It’s just my turn.”

PREVIOUSLY, February 26: Warner Bros and New Line have unveiled the first trailer for Horizon: An American Saga, actor-director Kevin Costner’s Civil War epic hitting theaters in two parts this summer, on June 28 and August 16.

Written by Costner and Jon Baird (The Explorers Guild), the film explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won — and lost — through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, it takes audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America. 

Deadline was first to report on the project, which marks Costner’s first behind the camera since 2003’s Open Range. The project sees him reengage with the setting of Dances with Wolves, his 1990 directorial debut, which grossed over $424M worldwide and won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Director.
