It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Danny DeVito has seemingly revealed when the new season will begin filming. The long-running comedy show about a group of Philadelphian bar owners, which also stars Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, and Kaitlin Olson, has been running on FX and then FXX since it premiered in 2005, with more than 170 episodes under its belt at the time of writing. Although the next installment will be It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17, the show was renewed for four seasons in 2020, which will extend its run until at least season 18.

On Twitter, Deadline shared a red carpet interview with Danny DeVito discussing the upcoming season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Check out the video below:

At the beginning of the clip, DeVito reveals that they are "going again in September." He also joked that, now that FX is with Disney, the show's signature ribald sense of humor can really let loose and "ruffle some feathers." Read his full quote below:

We’re going again in September… Now that we’re with Disney, we can… we’ve been very tame over the years. So now we can really pull out all the stops… ruffle a few feathers.

When Will It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 Premiere?

Danny DeVito's Filming Update Offers Some Major Clues

The gang looking shocked in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Although DeVito has seemingly confirmed when principal photography will commence on the new season, it remains to be seen when it actually premieres. Recently, the release pattern of the show has become increasingly unpredictable, requiring extensive hiatuses between seasons that have lasted as long as two years. This could be because of the many outside projects undertaken by the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia cast, including Howerton's show A.P. Bio, McElhenney's docuseries Welcome to Wrexham, and Olson's roles in Hacks and Agent Elvis.

However, if production really does commence in September, this offers some insight into when the premiere will come, as the show doesn't necessarily require a great deal of production, with shooting typically only taking a few months. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia seasons also typically lack extensive post-production needs, with the weekly release pattern helping stagger post-production on later episodes as well, leading to reasonably quick turnarounds. Below, see a filming and release schedule for the most recent seasons of the show:

The quick turnaround between production wrapping on season 15 and the first episode premiering likely came amid production delays during the COVID-19 pandemic, so it seems safer to assume that It's Always Sunny in Philadelpha season 17 will more closely follow the overall schedule of season 16, depending on how many episodes are ordered. This could mean that the show will be set to premiere as early as February 2025. However, any time in Spring 2025 seems entirely within reason as well.
