Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – MAY 2024 – #19-24

PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Aberdeen, Scotland jangle pop /psych-pop singer-songwriter, founding member and one-fifth of The Vapour Trails, Kevin Robertson “Rain Again” new single

Seamlessly walking on the pop tightrope between Jangle and Psychedelia, the Scotsman’s new single leans more toward the latter, weaving a moody wandering of vibrant strummed riffs, sparkling pain-fueled guitar melodies, enhanced by entrancing Chris Cacavas-like swirling keyboards around atmospheric vocals and ecstatic doomy backup harmonies, while reminding us not to get too cheery because if there is one thing you can count on it’s the “Rain Again”.

  • Massachusetts dream pop /shoegaze band Shallows “White Sands” single

Cinematic, lush and mesmerizing shoegaze romanticism from the Somerville based foursome, unfolds on thick hazy, dreamlike expansive layers of wistful sparkling guitar melodies, weaved with flurries of reverb-washed emotive drifts and shuddering plucks, to saturate the space in a broad swirl of heartfelt feelings along with beautifully tragic female vocals, radiating melancholy and pain whilst holding on to a loved one in the aftermath of a nuclear war.

  • Jakarta, Indonesia pop duo The Cottons “Harapan (Single Version)” from the upcoming “Harapan” EP

Less classic indie-pop than I remembered, but I’m talking about seven/eight years ago, the new daydreamy, bright, jazzy-tinged pop-at-heart tune, combines softly groovy brushing rhythms with vibrant searing rambling guitar licks, vaguely Steely Dan-style, and emotive twisted wah-wah keyboard swirls, to enrapture dreamy male/female vocals, in beautiful romantic bliss. The duo’s kind of new sophistic-pop incarnation could not prove more captivating.
