Keith Urban's "The Fighter" is so un-Country

I'm not the biggest Country fan, but I have CMT playing on my TV, and that was the most un-Country song I've heard since Train's "Hey Soul Sister" played on the channel in approximately 2010.

What is up with that? Does CMT want to make more money? Do they just want to attract new fans from other genres? Seriously — it just did not sound Country-enough to be on CMT, and yet, it was on the channel.

CMT is confused

u/Masterweedo avatar

Well, Jelly Roll did win several CMT awards, so yes.

I gave up when Taylor Swift kept winning

It's pop music with a banjo thrown in. Keith Urban might be the most uncountry country singer of all time. He has a killer voice, he's a great guitar player, and he is an awesome live show at least.

u/Bigstar976 avatar

Right. I’ve never considered him country.

I definitely liked early songs like 'Where the Blacktop Ends' at the time but yeah, it's always felt more like country flavored pop rock than actual country to me.

Exactly. Keith Urban isn’t categorizing his music. And sorry to say folks, he doesn’t care about fitting in a box, most artists don’t anymore. You don’t have to. Genre doesn’t exactly exist anymore if not just to make money in some fashion. 95% of the best artists these days are “just artists” if they want synthesizers and banjos in the same song someone like Keith will do it. It doesn’t matter. If you ask Keith himself, he’s not saying he is country and he is not saying he isn’t, he’s Keith, he’s Keith like jelly roll is jelly roll, like Taylor swift is Taylor Swift. Stop living in the past.

Yes true country music as it was still exists, listen to that if you wish, but don’t shit on other artists. People like Keith, are trendsetters, trail blazers, stop and think that you might not be the audience for commercial music anymore. I could go on.. but the music industry is different, there’s something different in the waters in the music industry these days and I love it. I hate it and love it, but I appreciate it

But sure, sure is it “country”like most of us know to be “country” ? no, but those artists exist too. Go find them and don’t gate keep it

He’s one of the best guitar players out there and has a great sound. Catchy songs! But I don’t consider him country.

u/PartywithCardi avatar

Great Live! But most of recent radio songs are weak.

u/Puzzleheaded-Law-429 avatar

Yeah, I don’t really call him country either.

He’s way closer to Bon Jovi than he is Garth Brooks.

Keith Urban is Un-country.

I avoid Keith Urban music like the plague

u/TheImageOfMe avatar

That's a decent pop song, but if you played it to someone who didn't know who Keith Urban is and asked them what genre it was, no one would say country.

It's all garbage anymore.

u/Bigstar976 avatar

It started with Garth Brooks and Shania Twain. They brought to country people who didn’t previously listen to country.

How is Much to Young to feel this damn old...or rodeo...or...wild horses...or the thunder rolls...or...unanswered prayers or....that girl is a cowboy or many many more of his songs not country?

People always blame Garth but he was always way closer to country than some others. I dont think hes to blame at all. Shania...sure her stuff sounds poppy as all get out. But most female country singers do.

Just so strange to me how popular this sentiment has become.

u/zack689 avatar

It's because his concerts were closer to rock shows than the traditional country artists. He took more inspiration from KISS than Willie.

u/SequinSaturn avatar

That says nothing about that music.

u/zack689 avatar

It was the perception by some back then, and only got worse over time. I became a Garth fan at the age of 10 from almost the beginning of his career, and there were many in my family who just didn't like him/get it because of his rock star antics. The TV specials only reinforced that idea, with smashing guitars, running around like a maniac, the pryotechnics, etc. Then add in the mainstream attention he was getting, being on a KISS tribute alum and appearing with them on The Tonight Show, the Chris Gaines deal, rewriting an Aerosmith song. He was also the first country artist to compete on the overall billboard album chart with the biggest artists in the world.
All that together makes it easy to throw him in that basket of not being country enough.

It’s been like that since radio started

u/Bigbadbrindledog avatar

It started way before them, goes all the way back to Elvis and probably before that.

Kenny Rogers, Oak Ridge Boys, Glen Campbell, Conway Twitty, Dolly Parton were all huge pop country singers long before Garth and Shania.

Garth and Shania ushered in a new era of pop country, but they certainly didn't start it.

But all these artists are actually country

u/Bigbadbrindledog avatar

They are all every but as pop as Garth. They all had songs charting on the pop charts.

Songs like Rhinestone Cowboy and 9-5 are just as poppy as friends in Low places or feel like a woman

Yes, but they are majority country

But I loved Rhinestone Cowboy. I remember writing a paper about the lyrics for English class. LOL

that’s why it’s country pop (country style pop music). It doesn’t have the sound, lyrics, and characteristics of pop country

I love love his early stuff. The fighter is so bad though

Keith Urban is so un-country

One of the many super cringe pop "country" songs from the 2010s. And I had nearly forgotten that song existed. Thanks a lot, lol.

I know Keith Urban has always been pop country for the most part, but he used to do good some pop country like "Your Everything," "Somebody Like You," "You'll Think Of Me," "You're My Better Half," "Making Memories Of Us," "I Told You So," "Without You," etc. He even used to do the rare neo-traditional sounding cut like "But For The Grace Of God," which is still my most favorite song of his.

His music from the last decade or so has been either awful or just forgettable pop fluff heavy on synthesizers and drum machines, though. I miss the more rock/acoustic sound of his earlier music that showcased his guitar playing more.
