Alice in Chains (AiC) is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1987 by guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell and drummer Sean Kinney, who later recruited bassist Mike Starr and lead vocalist Layne Staley. Starr was replaced by Mike Inez in 1993. William DuVall joined the band in 2006 as co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, replacing Staley, who had died in 2002. The band took its name from Staley's previous group, the glam metal band Alice N' Chains.

Layne Staley's mom sings Mad Season's "Wake Up"

She seemed like a really great mom. I wish he hadn’t broken her heart the way he did

Not only sings but also harmonizes with him. I wish there was a better quality audio so i could actually hear what type of voice she has.

"Our family went to church every week, and Layne got exposure from music there," shares McCallum. "My parents also had beautiful singing voices, and Layne would visit with them, where the radio was always playing. One of the first songs he ever sang was 'Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head,' and I remember him leaning over in his car seat and singing to me."

This will never stop being sad as all hell. I just imagine having to tell my son “wake up young man” in the same context as the song. Singing this after his passing has to be both incredibly painful as well as cathartic for her.

I'd love to hear her sing River of Deceit or Would? as this song is about heroin addiction and how it kills you

Her singing river of deceit would be amazing. One of my favorite songs hands down.

Never understood people who pay money to see someone sing at a small venue, and they’re screaming incessantly at the top of their lungs, while the performer is singing.

I hope this gets downvoted to hell so I know I've pissed off the correct people.

The caption is so fucking ridiculous man. This sub infuriates me so often. I don't understand how one can be such a big Alice fan so as to be in (and post in!) the AIC sub but then completely misunderstand the pain, loneliness, and self-isolation that are inseparable from addiction and mental illness - the very experiences and emotions that AIC is known for being able to capture in their art. It's getting to the point that I want to write an essay and post it in here, but that won't change anything.

Do you think Layne Staley's intention was to hurt his mother? Is that what you think addiction is? Like honestly. Give me a fucking break. I'm so tired of this bullshit. He was a human being. Stop treating his memory like a caricature onto which you're projecting your own perceptions of addicts.

Also, not even really relevant, but I'll bite. Do you know the dynamics of their relationship? Did you talk to both parties? Did you read books with details? Who were the sources on that? Did you watch interviews with Staley's mother? Was that before or after his death? You claim she seemed like a great mom. Based on what? How she's conducted herself after his death? How did she treat him when he was growing up? How did he treat her? (His stepdad admitted to throwing him against a wall in anger once. Based on what sociologists and psychologists know about abuse, it's never just one time. Do you think she stopped it? Or did she stay with her husband while he abused her son? Staley never talked about these things publicly in his lifetime, so we can't know the truth or the ramifications. I'm not here to judge whether she was a "great" mom. I'm just asking you some questions because you made 2 bold statements there without any real support or evidence.)

I'm so fucking done.

His dad did not cover himself in glory either. I’d guess multigenerational trauma but I don’t know the real story and have no way of knowing.

u/Noprisoners123 avatar

Well said.

Totally agree!! She is not a "great mother" if her son ended up dead for 2 weeks without her knowing 🙄 She could've helped him so much more but sadly he felt abandoned and died alone 😭

Your grammar is causing me pain. I’m really glad you’re done.

u/Noprisoners123 avatar

Attacking someone’s grammar because they expressed, at length, how they disagree with you, is VERY WEAK.

Only if it’s not too. I don’t suffer fools who piss and shit words

nice try!! that was actually written at the collegiate level. (dw, i'll stop that here.) i don't have anything to prove to someone who would write such a caption as you. i even deleted my original comment in which i insulted you because i can clearly tell you're coming from a place ignorance. have a nice life while lacking emotional intelligence and empathy for addicts and pw mental illnesses!! 🥰 i hope you grow, though.

Maybe you should pick up some night classes, brush up on it. Shall I get out my red pen?

In any event, you’re wrong. Layne came from privilege. He did things with his talent most people dream of. He had support, the money. He chose to die.

Don't be ignorant. People don't "choose" to become addicts, it's just inevitable cause once u try heroin ur brain changes forever.

You’re out of your depth, go back to the shallow waters where you belong. Gabor Mate lol. If you only knew how I made my living

Mate, you need to find a way to thicken your skin.

💝

Come on man, don’t talk about Layne that way.

u/honest_E-02 avatar

His death wasn’t the only thing that hurt their relationship.

Exactly, I don't understand people talking like this . Layne had a serious addiction and died all alone in his apartment and his "great mom" didn't know her son was dead for 2 weeks! FO...🙄

lol the people downvoting us have never experienced addiction, either personally or with someone they know. That’s what I’m chalking it up to.

I don't even care what they think...
