The Ashdown Forest is a rare habitat - low heathland in the South of England and s a wonderful mix of heath and woodland. It is ideal walking country. The hills are gentle and round every corner there are delights.
The forest's most famous resident is Winnie the Pooh and many of the places in the A.A. Milne's books can be visited, including Pooh Bridge, Hundred Aker Wood and the North Pole.
In the village of Hartfield is a shop dedicated to everything Pooh - it was in fact where Christopher (Milne or Robin) bought his sweets on Saturdays.
The visitor centre provides a good source of information about the area and usually has a small and interesting exhibition by local artists, etc.
There is always a good time to visit the Ashdown Forest - winter can bring snow (it is on the High Weald of Sussex); spring the delight of wildlife, yellow gorse; summer brings tearooms, call of the nightjar, grand vistas over the Downs, both North and South and Autumn, perhaps the best time - wonderful colour, conkers and sweet chesnuts and a variety of funghi.
The area is rich in wildlife, it is one of the sites of the very rare darford warbler, and it is rare not to spot deer.
Whatever the weather - enjoy this wonderful spot for walking and enjoying the outdoors
