For me, some are: Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, Sigur Ros, and !!!

Q&A
I went through a year of calling deadmau5 "dead mow five" during his peak
To be fair, he does pronounce it in a few different ways to screw with people
deadmau5 is like peak 2009 internet spork random, for better or worse. Kind of endearing cause he seems like a good dude, just a time capsule.
i pronounced 6ix 9ine
six ix nine ine
wait…. that’s not how you say that?
Noooo, it’s dead mouse
I did the exact same thing for months before one of my friends stopped me and said “you know it’s pronounced “deadmouse” right? And I’m like “what the fuck I’ve been saying that for months!” And he says “yeah we didn’t have the heart to correct you.”
So I made a shirt that says It’s Pronounced “dead mow five” and I wear it to all his shows. Joel even signed it for me at a pop up in Denver :D
I straight up refuse to name artists with numbers or "replacement letters" in their names correctly because I think it's dumb. Hence I still refer to deadmau5 as deadmau-5 and PVRIS as pvris.
For the longest time I thought "Deafheaven" was "Deaf-haven".
Always pronounced Jesu like "yes-oo" instead of "yay-zoo"
Also turns out you don't pronounce Björk like "Byork", you pronounce it "Byerk".
My mom also says Anna von Hausswolff as "Anna von Awesomevoice"
Yeah Ö is not the same as O. Ö sounds like the "eu" part of odeur.
I love that you chose odeur instead of bird or sth more obvious
Hahah yeah that's true, I was having a shit while writing the comment so that might explain my thought process.
If you know what a french “eu” sounds like that would be an even better equivalent (i think).
Although as a swede i’ve obviously never struggled with it I always find it amusing hearing foreigners try instead of going with the cop out “byork” :)
Happycakedy
Woah, just looked up the IPA for Byörk [pjœr̥k]. If it helps, the ö is like an [ɛ] or “eh”, (e)very but with rounded lips (u, o, w). Also love the voiceless alveolar trill, but I don’t know if I’ve ever heard somebody pronounce her name with it.
Wow are you me
Literally ALL those artists named, I was gonna name too!
Anna von hausswolff truly does have an awesome voice, wish more people knew about her
There's a lot of people who pronounce Björk wrong
I was one of them, but yes it's pronounced "Byerk"
I pronounce it “be-York”
Then you are pronouncing it wrong. But I also don't care and I doubt Björk does either.
I dokt even listen to them so Idc rlly
Bee-jyehrrrrrk
Man…I’m fucking 35 years old and have never once heard this. Thanks.
Always knew that it was Bgork. Thanks
It's a basic answer but 6lack. Can't believe I was calling him six lack for a year
I refuse to call him 'Black.' You pick a stage name that stupid you live with the consequences.
Also as well, having just “Black” as a stage name is honestly one of the worst I’ve ever heard, “six-lack” at least sounds somewhat unique if still dumb.
6lack sounds like a username
His real name is Ricardo Valentine and he’s an R&B singer! I don’t know why he even wants to use a stage name
His real name sounds so much better!
To be fair there was logic behind it, if your name is just “black” how the hell do you show up on search engines
I mean yeah, but that in itself kinda suggests that you should pick a different name
i call him "slack" i'll be honest
Is it not 6 Black? Damn.
nah just black
that's kinda stupid
Idc how it’s pronounced he’s 6 lack for life
Lol I'm never not calling Six Lack
It’s a cool stage name to read but pronunciation wise it just falls flat. Not a great idea to have a name that can be said 3 different ways depending on what people feel like calling you lol
Shit like this is why when I refer to the artist Blxst i say it like bluckst instead of just blast
This one is unfortunate because 6-lack is a way better stage name than black
Bladee, i used to pronounce it like bladey
i’m bladee she call me bladey
Angel or demon maybe
I still do and refuse to pronounce it “blade”
Lol I used to pronounce it like Bla-dee
i say blade but you can say bladey 2
I thought it was pronounced blah-day like sade
Bon Iver was my first major whiff
I used to pronounce it Bon Eye-ver
I think we all did lol
🙈 wait…. Tell me how Iver is pronounced please
It’s pronounced like “Bone Eevair”
Happened to us all comrade.
two phases of initial introduction to bon iver: learning it’s a band name and not a persons name (there is at least one person in this thread that skipped this step), learning how to pronounce it.
Isn’t Bon pronounced like pawn and iver like revere
His name is a deliberate misspelling of Bon Hiver which is French for "good winter". The 'H' is silent.
You say Bon the way you would bon appetit or bon voyage ("bonn") but when you put the two words together it sounds like "bone e-vare" or "boney vare"
Ohh I hadn’t thought about it in that context .
The fact that idk bon iver is good winter and I once listened to for Emma forever ago 30-35 times on loop is a lil weird but thanks mate
I think it's kind of like bone eever (ver as in very)
I refuse to pronounce his name any other way than "Bawn Eyevur"
Laufey
I still don't have it correct even after hearing hundreds of others say it 😭
Lay vey
I always thought it was LAU-faye (like Faye Webster), but honestly I'm not sure if I'm going too hard with it and it's just LAU-fee
funnily enough its neither
Loy-Vay
Coc-Too Twins
JID. Saying “jid” sounds a lot more normal to me now, but I used to pronounce it as J.I.D (pronouncing all the letters)
Destin Choice Route (born October 31, 1990), known professionally as JID (also stylized J.I.D)
Both are right but yeah might as well just said jid like “jittery”
Tbh it works either way
MØ, I don't want to pronounce her name "moo". Turns out, the correct way to pronounce is "moo" with a Australian accent.
Meau
I have finally confirmed that it is “hose-ear” after countless people talked me into “hojir”
I say hose-ier, like a 6 foot hose is a hose, but a 12 foot hose is hosier
"Hozier" takes the complete mystique out of his name lol. Sounds like Frasier. The correct pronunciation is so much cooler
Kid Cudi (Kid Coodi, because there's literally one D).
RZA & SZA (I used to spell them).
Also, Tove Lo is apparently "Too Vee Luu"in Swedish.
Doesn’t Cudi’s biggest hit end with him saying his name? How could you mess it up?
If you mean Day N Night, I only heard it through the video clip for a long long time, never the original audio (although he says it very vaguely there lol).
Wait it’s not Kid Coodi???
it's kid cuddy
Kid cutie
Also GZA
For years, I thought Kid Cudi was pronounced like "Kid Cue-dee" and I still catch myself saying it like that sometimes. I remember one time, I met this girl who was saying it the correct way and I kept saying "uh I think you're saying it wrong, I'm pretty sure it's Cue-dee". 😭
That Cudi one is just egregious 😭
