      Critics Consensus

Despite an intriguing noir aesthetic and the gothic charisma of Alex O'Loughlin, Moonlight just plain ol' sucks.

Amelie Gillette AV Club What is the point of making a TV show about a vampire if the vampire is so boring? Rated: D Aug 5, 2020 Full Review Tim Goodman San Francisco Chronicle Woeful acting? Check. Cheap effects? Check. Worst writing of the new season? Check. Predictability? Pretensions? Faint imitations of superior shows? Someone at CBS shouldn't just have their neck bitten, but sliced through, for this one. Rated: 1/4 Aug 5, 2020 Full Review Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe Moonlight doesn't deserve an engaging lead, since it's dead -- not dead and then undead, just plain dead -- on arrival. Aug 5, 2020 Full Review Holger Haase Den of Geek Sleek, sexy, stylish and very modern. Rated: 5/5 Aug 5, 2020 Full Review Travis Fickett IGN Movies The show isn't terrible. It's just a mix of disparate parts that really don't add up to much. Rated: 5.6/10 Aug 5, 2020 Full Review Will Wade Common Sense Media The two of them make a decent team when it comes to solving crimes, though their cases aren't especially challenging, and clues tend to land in their laps. daj b The good entertainment value far outweighs the few flaws. Deserved a few more seasons. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review helmut s Best ever the critics are wrong again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Serendipity A I loved this series & was so bummed when it ended prematurely. The chemistry between the main characters practically sizzles off your television screen!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/02/22 Full Review Audience Member I can only assume that CBS just didn't have faith in this show from the beginning. The show is low budget and it shows. At a minimum, you would think that a supernaturally centered show, about vampires, would have, at its core, special effects. No, this show's presentation of what a "vampire" is, contact lenses and fake teeth, and THAT'S IT. Oh and super strength, speed, etc, non existent. Not only that, but because of this complete lack of budget, they present preposterous scenarios like a victim family member, at an execution witnessing, meets a reporter and goes home with her. No you didn't have the budget to create her own house and present a believable story. I've seen stage plays with more immersion and believability in them, than this show. The acting was bad and the writing was horrible. Lasting one season shows why. I notice some of the other reviews are from people remembering how they felt, watching the show, when they were a child. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review steve d It does nothing new with its strong cast and cool atmosphere, leading views to feel like we have already seen it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Fun vampire show , the main character is compelling but sometimes the writing fails him .
