This Sunday, May 12, two days before the launch of the Film Festival, the installation of the poster for this 77th edition at the Palais officially launched the festivities.

On the Croisette, calm still reigns before the cinematic storm. This Sunday, May 12, two days before the launch of the Cannes Film Festival (which runs from May 14 to 25), the official poster for the ceremony was installed on the main facade of the Palais des Festivals.

Shortly 8:30 a.m., seven technicians, including a mountaineer, first placed this poster, 25 meters long and weighing approximately 190 kg, on the steps, before hoisting it to the front of the room.

This poster is taken from the film Rhapsody in August (1991), by Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. In this film, he tells the story of a grandmother who survived the bombing of Nagasaki in 1945, who “transmits to her grandchildren and her American nephew her faith in love and integrity as a bulwark against war”, sums up the Cannes Film Festival.

The image is disconcertingly soft: five people are sitting side by side on a bench facing a landscape in shades of blue. Above all, it was a challenge for the team responsible for it.

“On the image which was selected by the Festival, we remain on trends with depth and perspective on a flat rendering: having a dark effect on the sides and a clear image on the central with a gradient of blue, it’s not easy”, indicates Sylvain Vivier, director of the H2O printing company at 3 Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur.

The red carpet will be installed on May 14

After the triumph ofAnatomy of a fall by Justine Triet last year, 22 films will be in competition for this 77th edition. As a reminder, the jury will be chaired by Greta Gerwig, director of the film barbie.

She will be surrounded by screenwriter Ebru Ceylan, actresses Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Eva Green (The three Musketeers), from director Nadine Labaki (Capernaum), from director Juan Antonio Bayona (Jurassic World), of the actor Pierfrancesco Favino (World War Z), from director Kore-Eda Hirokazu (Innocence) and Omar Sy.

As the launch of the event approaches, preparations are continuing to welcome these personalities and the hundreds of others who will climb the legendary steps of the Cannes Film Festival.

The only downside: a demonstration could well take place during the festivities. A collective of cinema workers called on May 6 for a strike “of all employees of the Cannes Film Festival and parallel sections” to denounce the growing precariousness of their jobs. This type of action is extremely rare and will not call into question the opening ceremony. However, it could disrupt the event.

In the meantime, after the installation of the huge poster on the Palais des festivities, another important step will take place on Tuesday May 14 before the launch of the week dedicated to cinema: the installation of the red carpet, a length of 24 meters.
