Summary

  • A Quiet Place: Day One will reveal more about Djimon Hounsou's mysterious character from the 2020 sequel, including his name.
  • Director Michael Sarnoski teases unexpected twists in the prequel, diving into the relationships of strangers facing the end of the world together.
  • Actor Alex Wolff hints that Day One might lean more toward drama rather than horror, despite the alien carnage teased in the trailer.

John Krasinski’s successful vision for a quieter and deadlier on-screen future continues in filmmaker Michael Sarnoski’s upcoming A Quiet Place: Day One. However, Day One backtracks before the Abbott family faced off against the so-called alien “Listeners” in the franchise’s first installment. The horror prequel centers on the character portrayed by Lupita Nyong'o, who teams up with a familiar face from A Quiet Place Part II: Djimon Hounsou. And this time, moviegoers get to know more about Hounsou’s mysterious islander, including his name. Sarnoski said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

We do get to learn his name... I won't tell you what it is.

Sarnoski continued:

"That was definitely a jumping-off point for a lot of things. Then we took it into our own direction to explore, but [Hounsou] certainly plays the same character he is in the second movie. It's not his twin or anything like that. He's there, and we get to learn a little bit more about that backstory and how that group of people started out."

Krasinski’s big-screen team-up with his real-life wife, Emily Blunt, paid huge dividends when the original A Quiet Place debuted in 2018. The horror flick became a smash hit and made $341 million worldwide (per Box Office Mojo). However, is Day One truly following in the other entries’ footsteps? Is the prequel even a horror film? Day One co-star Alex Wolff weighs in with his own unique take.

Alex Wolff Portrays a Friend to Lupita Nyong'o in A Quiet Place: Day One

Joining Lupita Nyong'o and Djimon Hounsou in A Quiet Place's (2018) prequel is Alex Wolff (Jumanji franchise, Hereditary, Oppenheimer). However, Wolff believes A Quiet Place: Day One is less horror and more drama. Whether that turns out to be true or not remains to be seen, because the trailer teases plenty of alien carnage caused by the so-called “Death Angels.” Director Michael Sarnoski addressed Wolff's character in the same interview:

"I can say that Alex Wolff plays a friend to Lupita's character who goes through some craziness that they have to deal with together. The biggest thing for me was that the first two films very much circle around a family and these people that have established relationships. I wanted to explore a little more of what it would look like for strangers to have to go through the end of the world together."

But this summer, audiences will finally have the opportunity to fall silent again.
