Peter is subjected to endless brutality and threats of death as he undertakes back-breaking work to build the railroad alongside fellow slaves. He overhears Confederate soldiers discussing President Abraham Lincoln's proclamation that all slaves shall be free and Peter hatches a hare-brained plan to escape his hellish ordeal and seek refuge with the Union Army in Baton Rouge. The slaves seize an opportunity to flee into the swamps of Louisiana.
