How did Argentina join WW2?

By declaring war on Germany on March 27 1945.

Why?

Significant pressure from the allies and knowing that the end was weeks away.

Did they have any real effect on the war?

None whatsoever. It was symbolic.

Do they didn’t deploy any troops?

No. The war ended on May 8. That's basically 6 weeks after declaring war.

To add to this there were many countries that declared war on Germany/Japan in the final weeks of the war as nothing more than a diplomatic gesture. The reason was because of the UN, which literally started off as just the allied nations at the time, and in order to get membership you had to declare war on the axis.

That’s why they waited until the end of the war, they wanted to join but didn’t want to risk upsetting the axis powers in case they actually won the war.

Most of Spain and Portugal's former colonies were divided along the lines of the Spanish civil war. Argentina had both a very large communist and Nazi party movement. Argentina was also had one of the largest german immigrant communities outside Europe. Hitler spoke often about integrating Argentina and Brazil into Germany and the importance of the eastern coast of South America to the German economy and military.

Similar to the US, Argentina has always had a very low hunter-gatherer native population compared to Peru or Mexico. So because they had massive amounts of virtually empty arable farmland, Argentina quickly became the breadbasket of Europe similar to the US midwest region, and their economy was largely reliant on exporting food to europe.

This encouraged neutrality whenever it came to colonial wars in Europe, so just as they had done many times before, they attempted maintain neutrality in WW2. The government officially remained neutral but many were allowed to join to fight with Britain. Most Nazi war criminals however, fled to Argentina following the collapse of Nazi Germany and the government granted many of them asylum. Israel regularly committed extrajudicial assasinations and kidnapping of nazi war criminals found hiding in Argentina until 2000 when the government officially declassified the program and issued a formal apology

Wow that’s super interesting. Do you have a link on the Israel thing?

Argentine here. Everything said above is spot on, well done! You can read on the Eichmann kidnapping or view the Netflix film "Operation Finale".

Yo tambien soy Argentino, obviamente sabia lo de Perón y los Nazis, pero no tenia idea de que habiamos entrado oficialmente en guerra.

Perón no era ningún boludo.

Argentina’s biggest contribution to WWII was in sheltering infamous Nazi war-criminals after the war ended.

Why?

They wanted a spot in the U.N which victorious nations would get once WW2 was over.
