Outlook/Hotmail email "Successful Sync" from another IP. What does it mean?

Status: Open

It says

Protocol: IMAP Type: Successful Sync

and above it as a generic type: Automatic Sync.

Does that mean that they had access to my email or only that they managed to try to login with the email and password but were blocked. I have 2FA enabled so I'm not sure how that's possible. I've noticed a lot of attempts from random countries over the years but this is the first time I see a Successful Sync, from what I remember at least. It's not my main email, it's an old one I used to use and it has been in a few data breaches as I noticed from ihavebeenpwned but still.

I have no App Passwords Set, no Trusted Devices. Only secondary email and restore codes or however they are called when I created the email. The IP address that was successful ends in 2d79 and when I look it up it shows:

IP2 Location United States, Ohio, Jerusalem ISP RapidSeedbox Ltd

DB IP United States, New York, New York ISP AS395839 HOSTKEY (HOSTKEY-USA)

Is this a Microsoft thing and if not did they bypass 2FA and how?

edit: Contacted support, they said they have a large volume of tickets concerning people getting a notification that someone else tried to access their account. Checked my email said that everything was fine, perhaps it was a false alarm(?), no clue. Also forgot to mention that the Account Alias was blank on the Automatic Sync. I did the sign out from everywhere and reset password just in case.

outlook.com has block website

Where are you seeing this successful sync message?

u/kiku_ichimonji avatar

In Security-> View Activity tab on the website. Not going there through a link.

Could it say successful sign in instead of successful sync?

u/kiku_ichimonji avatar

Not it says Automatic Sync. And when I click it Type: Successful sync.

I've never seen that. It doesn't sound like an account breach. More like maybe your MS data being synced between multiple devices linked to your account. That's my best guess.

Did you recently add another device to your account?
