Ten years after the Black Death devastated the country, a poor family sets out on a journey to search for better living conditions. In a deserted mountain pass, they are attacked by a gang of ruthless killer thieves. The only one spared is 19 year old Signe. She is taken prisoner, and the gang brings her back to their camp. Here, she soon learns that they have a fate worse than death in store for her, and realises that her only hope is to escape.

Dagmar (Ingrid Bolsø Berdal) was certainly an intriguing character and made me wish they had put in more effort into the script because the potential was definitely there!

Out of Norway comes a lean, rugged, and gorgeous addition to the Historical Chase Actioner micro-genre that I love so much. Only four minutes into Escape/Flukt and tragic savagery has left Signe’s family slaughtered, the young girl now a captive of Dagmar’s brigands. What follows is entirely all survival, all chase through the Black Plague-ravaged countryside.
Dagmar is the most (or perhaps only) recognizable face here, played by Westworld’s Ingrid Bolsø Berdal with primal intensity. A monstrous merciless antagonist, but one from whom director Roar Uthaug provides a layer of sympathetic nuance. Isabel Christine Andreasen as Signe and Milla Olin as the “adopted” ward-cum-fellow escapee Frigg are both fantastic as well; the child actors have stellar chemistry, often saying more…
No nonsense Norwegian period piece chase film with the wonderful Ingrid Bolsø Berdal playing a tortured, cruel leader of a gang of thieves/murderers....who also manages to make you feel sorry for her at the same time. Occasionally.
Once it gets rolling it never really slows down, sometimes to the negative, as I would have liked the chance for a couple of scenes to breathe before rushing on. For the most part though the movie is totally entrancing and the two young girls being chased have great chemistry with each other and are quite convincing as two lost souls finding friendship/family in a horribly cruel world.
There were a couple of moments that seemed a little convenient or downright unbelievable but it's usually something fairly small and the beautiful scenery distracts you from getting too upset about it.

Nice little surprise from Netflix. 1363 Norway. A nomad gang rob and kill a family and take the teenage daughter with them. She escapes and the chase is on. Very well done and acted. The action is top notch. Some genuinely pump your fist up and cheer moments. At 78 minutes it feels epic so, yeah, good movie.
Simple action-thriller set in the 1300s of Norway. Ten years past the Black Plague when half the population has been killed and lawlessness roams the land, a family of four is attacked. Only the daughter survives, and she is taken by the band of raiders to be used to bear children for them. You can guess what happens next based on the title of the film.
Escape does a great job early on making you empathize with the young heroine, and so you're suitably tense and engaged as she continues to narrowly avoid capture and deal with her pursuers one by one. It's reminiscent in a way of War of the Arrows, without the more epic plot and memorable action…
The atmosphere in "Escape" is thick, the acting is brilliant, the action is brutal, but the thing which holds "Escape" together more than anything is the characters. The main female actors here (two of them children) can convey so much to one another with just a look. Ingrid Berdal is particularly impressive in the way she comes very close to encouraging full-blown sympathy, rather than just empathy, when her character is utterly monstrous.
I thought "Cold Prey" was a brilliant slasher movie, but "Escape" is a brilliant film regardless of its genre. It is criminal that this film has not been seen by more people. It deserves more recognition.

Welcome to the Middle Ages! In Norway this was a time defined by neatly groomed hipster beards, excellent dentistry and a plethora of dialects. The music of the time was vaguely Lords of the Rings-ish, with plenty of etheral warbling, Enya style. Also, it was extremely loud and supremely annoying.
The only thing that amused me in this trainwreck of a film was spotting Gaahl, evil black metaller and generally silly man, playing one of the bad guys. So this is the way he's spending his time when he's not roaming the streets of Bergen being evil. An excellent case of typecasting, I'm sure he did bring his own sword.
A family traveling through fourteenth-century Norway are attacked by a gang of outlaws led by the blond woman on the poster—they are all killed except for the 19-year-old daughter, who is taken back to their camp, where she will be raped in order to produce a child, a "sister" for the young girl living with the outlaws. Before that happens, the young girl helps the daughter escape into the wilderness, chased by the gang of outlaws who want the little girl back. The rest of the movie is a chase as the pair of girls try to stay ahead of the outlaws.

Great scenery but predictable. Typical survival movie that could’ve benefited from more gore as the kills felt bland, especially if its the bad guys that were killed.
I got a copy on DVD, but I wish that I'd tracked down a Blu-ray! Still a great low budget tight 80 minute flick!
Norwegian medieval wilderness action flick, that really surprised me, by how good it was! Outlaws kill a girl's family and kidnap her, she escapes, they give chase. It's lean and also pretty mean. It's superbly paced, nicely shot, in stunning locations and the main villain has a proper backstory and depth. The lead girl is great, there a loads of kills and it's only 80 minutes!
This director would go on to make the most recent Tomb Raider, there are similarities, but this is head and shoulders above, but I'll definitely be checking out more of his Norwegian output. Highly recommended!
