Editorial Reviews
Hand-selected by the band members from their personal music archives, Ladies And Gentelmen . . . The Bangles! is a 16-track collection of remastered ’80s-era rarities, demos, live recordings and more, including The Bangles’ debut single and all of the tracks from their self-titled EP—produced by legendary Ramones/Blondie producer Craig Leon—unavailable since its initial release on vinyl in 1982. Encompassing the very first years of the band’s development, from their earliest days as The Bangs to their incarnation as The Bangles, the tracks include performances by The Bangles’ founding and current members—Susanna Hoffs, Debbi Peterson, and Vicki Peterson—as well as now-retired bassist Michael Steele, and the band’s original bass player Annette Zilinskas. “We’re so pleased to give our fans and music lovers alike the chance to enjoy the early fruits of our labor. Some of these tracks have never seen the light of day,” states Bangles drummer/singer Debbi Peterson. “We’ve wanted to make these songs available to a new audience for a long time,” adds singer/guitarist Vicki Peterson. “We’ve thrown in a couple of live tracks, and even some of the first demos, all lovingly collected and re-mastered, so you no longer have to dig out a cassette player to hear them.” Singer/guitarist Susanna Hoffs continues, “I feel a very special connection to our early recordings. The garage of my parents’ house was our musical laboratory, and we took all the flavors of our favorite bands and mixed up a concoction of jangly guitars, McCartney-inspired bass parts, grooves powered by punk energy, and harmonies galore! These songs and recordings were our musical manifesto—all that mattered and inspired us, fueled by youthful energy, hope and blind ambition.” Previously available as a download-only, Omnivore Recordings is proud to offer this compilation, many tracks available for the first time on CD, in partnership with the band. Ladies And Gentlemen . . . The Bangles!

For the longtime fans, this compilation restores the whispered opening to "Bitchen Summer" as it originally appeared on the "Rodney on the ROQ, Vol. 2" vinyl (as opposed to the edited version that made it to CD). The tracks that are only now seeing the light of day are worth the price of admission if you already have the 60% of this collection that was originally released on vinyl. The live version of "Tell Me" is particularly exhilarating, and it's great to finally have a recording of the Bangles' cover of Arthur Lee & Love's "7 & 7 Is" which they've been pounding out since those first days in the clubs. If you've acquired, say, "Outside Chance" through some old Napster mp3 or something, you'll be thrilled to hear how much better this sounds; just listen to the mp3 sample and you'll see what I mean.
When the Bangles were signed to a major label, over time their sound and vision was somewhat hijacked by their producer. Material being provided from Prince and Jules Shear, excellent though it was, tended to send a message that the label didn't have faith in the Bangles' own songwriting. For anyone who had any doubts, this collection sets the record straight. Pop, garage, rock, neo-psychedelia - this is everything you ever loved about rock and roll.
Footnote: the DownKiddie label on which this is issued is the Bangles' original label from 1981 when, as The Bangs, they released their first indie 45 ("Getting Out Of Hand" / "Call On Me"). Those were the days when the artwork for that first single was assembled on their kitchen table. It doesn't get more indie than that.
This CD sounds good and there are recordings on here that I had never heard before until now.
16 tracks in all, including 4 Demos, 2 Live tracks, 3 tracks from their very beginning, THE BANGS, before they renamed the band THE BANGLES and tracks from their long out of print 1982 EP.
The CD is a nicely done "Eco Friendly" design and has a few pictures inside showing a few of the backstage passes from 1983. Front cover shows the 4 original band members, 3 of which still remained in the band. They would later pick up Michael for their 1984, 1986, and 1988 albums. 1990 saw them part ways for awhile with the release of the single disc "Greatest Hits".
Susanna Hoffs, lead singer for the band would go solo and have decent success at that doing a few albums.
The band would later reunite for at least 2 more albums starting with "Doll Revolution".
No band sounds like them when they kick in their harmonies.
Yes, I started with their pop hits and was fortunate to find their early records.
This is nice to have it all on one disc.

Simply it's broken into 4 parts. First there's 3 songs they recorded when they were just calling themselves The Bangs. Next is their 1982 5 track EP after they became The Bangles. After that we get singles and unreleased tracks and then finally followed by the demos.
Over all I really liked it. It's nice to see their older tracks finally getting a proper release. The songs have a sixties style sound. The girls started the band because they were huge Beatles fans, so it's not surprising that their early music has a sixties Beatles sound.

とはいっても耳に馴染むポップなメロディーで、サイケ風味もあり最高です。
